Tivo Upgrade
I have had DTV for a year now and want to purchase a Tivo Box and have a few questions and thought maybe you guys could help me out.
I have what I believe is a standard round dish (dual LNB type) and was wondering if I need one of oval dishes for Tivo?
As for the tivo box where/how can I get it the cheapest? Online anywhere? I only see new customer deals. I asked a PC richards and they said I needed a new dish and it was 150 installed? Is that good? Also I got a card from DTV offering one for $85 no mention of a new dish.
I would appriciate any positive comments you all have to share!
Thanx

Re: Tivo Upgrade
I think tivo works with just about everything, even (can you imagine?) an aerial antenna. When I was setting my Tivo box up, I remember noting that they had about seven different installation instructions for different set ups.
By the way, I strongly suggest that you buy a cheap 802.11b USB wireless unit to attach to the back of the tivo so you won't have to deal with running a wire to your telephone.

Re: Tivo Upgrade
hmmm, I was referring to the DTV Tivo Boxes. How much does a stand alone Tivo cost? Why do you need to connect the Tivo to the phone line?

Re: Tivo Upgrade
Any one have any information on hooking up one of those DVR Tivo DirecTV receivers directly to your computer? I've heard that you can write programs to your hard drive. Can you do that with new receivers?

i got mine for $99 at best buy. 40GB HD in it. Uses the same round dish I had with DirecTV before. Just need to call then and give them serial numbers of the new Tivo box before it will work. I also recommend running two wires from the dish to the box so you can watch one channel while recording another at the same time. I'm not sure what it uses the phone line for, firmware updates maybe.
My box also has two USB ports on the back. The manual says they are for future use. I don;t think the current firmware allows transfer to a PC but you can find updates on the web that will allow you to do that I think.

Re: Tivo Upgrade
I bought a Phillips DTV controller for $99.00 at Best Buy with the tivo package that was great because it will automaticlly change the channels and comes with two inputs.

Re: Tivo Upgrade
I have had my Sony DTV Tivo unit for almost 4 years now. It has been running flawlessly. I haven't added drives or tweaked it too much. I did hook up a USB NIC to it so that it could make it's calls over my network so that I would not have to tie up my phone. Once you go TiVo, you never go back!

Re: Tivo Upgrade
Tivo is now offering $100 rebate on their stand alones. Rebate is good till Sept. 30 I believe. Costco sells the 120 hr for $299, which is cheaper than Tivo sells it for on their site.

Re: Tivo Upgrade
DVRs are wonderful. the nice thing about them is that they are adictive. If you get your DVR from DTV directly right now it is kind of a shitty deal, you get the r10 (80gig) box for $99.00 and then $49 for the installation (includes almost anything necessary-second line, 2new lines, multiswitch, antenna upgrade, and box--it doesn't include a phone line run to the room, or a wireless modem for the reciever if no phone in the room), then you get a $100 rebate check in the mail so you pay $48 in the end, and then $5.99/mo per account for the DVR service--or get it free with TCPremier. Now here is the shitty part--to me anyways--with the purchase and activation of any "advanced product" (HD, DVR, HD-DVR) there is a two year commitment to service. Love TiVo, love the dual tuner, hate the commitment.
