So I know you used to do the tv installation and talked about this stuff in a previous tv thread. Is it worth it? I was going to pass on it, especially cause their explanation didn't make much sense. I did opt for the service plan.

Re: TV Calibration

Don't do it. Let me know what model TV you have and I can probably find the recommended video settings for you.

The calibration is an option if you want an accurate image. They also generally increase the life expectancy (not by much though) by turning down the brightness and vividness of the colors. I know a lot of today's buyers are looking for reds that bleed off the tv, but I prefer to see reds that actually look like something I could see walking down the street, and not in a "bad trip".

This is why I do not like LCDs as much, even though they are getting pretty good lately.

Anyway, if you want a decent calibration that doesn't involve the really good settings from a certified technician, try DVD Essentials:

Yeah, I though you said no. I declined it and wanted to confirm. The 4 year service plan should cover any life expectancy lost then.

Re: TV Calibration

Pfft..... I'm about to step up to a real TV! Yep, I'm moving into the modern age and am gonna get me something with color! Matter o' fact, I'm gonna get me a TV for my bedroom to boot!!

Anyway, what would be a good recomendation?? My entertainment center will hold a 32" screen. The bedroom has no limit. (Wait, that's a different thead)

Also, I don't have surround sound; I've thought about adding this when I get a flat screen.

Well, according to her, I can have a tv in the den, but the big screen with surround sound must go in the bedroom. I guess she'll watch the Obama campaign speeches before bedtime...

Re: TV Calibration

Your settings will ultimately depend on the type of room your TV is in, lighting, type of shows/movies and your seating area. I have a 61" DLP, and it took me a few weeks to get the setting to where I liked them. Sometimes I will have to tweak it a little if I am watching a darker/nighttime movie, but after a few times you learn how your TV works.

Re: TV Calibration

Here's a couple settings I dug up for Samsung.

Quote:
Mode-Standard (daytime)

Contrast-60
Bright-45
Sharp-30
Color 46
Color Tone-Normal

Mode-Custom (a little less intense for night)

Contrast-50
Bright-45
Sharp-30
Color 47
Color Tone-Warm

Start with those and adjust as you see fit. When you do make picture adjustments, make minor adjustments to one setting at a time, and then watch the TV for awhile to notice any difference. Like FattyJJ said, the light in the room is going to make a difference on how to set your TV for the best picture, so mess around with it a bit until you're happy. Make sure you're viewing a full spectrum picture(A good mix of dark/bright, still/fast action, ect.) to decide if you have it set how you want it.

Re: TV Calibration

The brightness should be less for night viewing. It's only there to counter the glare that sunlight creates.
