Re: 16-year-old drops out of school to play Guitar Hero

Even if he can make it big how long will it last. The way the gaming business is who knows how long Guitar Hero will last.

I'm an avid pool player and back in my younger days spent many hours a day hanging in pool halls and going to tournaments, etc. I know Corey Duel, a now professional pool player and world champion in 2001. He was about 14, born in '77, when his mother use to drop him off at the pool hall where I use to shoot at back in the 90's. Luckily for him, an old professional world champion from the '30s thru '50s, Jimmy Caras took a shine to him and taught him quite a bit that normally take years of self learning. He still does well and just won a tourrnament for $20,000 in Valley Forge(cost him $5000 entrance fee). I don't know how he's fairing lately but without endorsements he probably wouldn't make it. Most pro's have jobs, business or backers who put up gambling stakes where the player gets a part of the winnings. When you figure being on the road paying for entrance fees, hotel rooms, restaurant food, and transportation, you have to wonder if it's really worth the effort. Only a few of the pros make a good living at it. If he don't have a good 401K he's going to be in trouble.

I agree with licu. The cost of maintaining life from one event to the next can be astronomical. Endorsements and sponsors are a blessing.

It's like that with a lot of competitions. It's almost like you have to have money to make money. Some of the tennis tournaments you have to go through a lot just to be able to make it into the round to make money. It's a whole weeks worth of playing before you actually make it into the main draw.

The kid is better off getting a real guitar. real guitar=real groupies
Just learn a few chords and be a kick ass bass player

Re: 16-year-old drops out of school to play Guitar Hero

To be fair, he was already doing crappy in school, and it's not like his parents totally let him off the school hook. They got him a private tutor and he can probably take his GED and do fine once he figures out professional gaming is stupid. Would I let my kids take this path? Probably not, but I'm not there. I would guess the parents had probably lost hope that he would take the "normal" path in the first place.

One gamer, quoted at the end of the linked article, says that in eight years his total earnings are about $25,000 total, and that's including a national championship in Halo 2.

In two more years they'd show him the door at school anyway but he's lucky he has parents that can pay for a private tutor. He must be white, if he was inner-city black he'd probably be selling drugs and want to stay in school to keep up contact with his customers.

If the gamer noted is about average with an income of about $3,000 a year that's definitely not much of a future. Nut cases that get out of school and can't hold a job get better money collecting SSI. It was $400 a month years ago so it might be closer to $500 a month now.

I doubt if it's a career he'll be able to make money at for the next 50 to 60 years. He needs to make at least $5 to $10 million to eek out a middle class living to live on for that amount of time. With a GED at best he'll be able to get into community college and then he'll most likely need to take remedial reading and math classes before he can take some of the courses he'll need for college credits. Looks like a hard life to come unless there is a lot more money in computer gaming than I perceive. Maybe they'll come up with a burger flipping game for the Wii that he can use to learn a career backup.
