LA help!
Two of my friends are moving to LA; the ladies have jobs working in the ER of a hospital on the West side of LA. The name is Kaiser-something-or-other Medical Center (?) and they'll be living in an apartment complex about 10 minutes away.
Can anyone tell me if this is an okay area for 'em? Safe? What about the apartment complexes? Maintenance folks show up when you need 'em? Crime rate??
The travel nursing agency told them if they're not happy in this complex they'd put them in Hollywood or Beverly Hills. They're concerned about living in these areas because of the travel time to work. (This assumes traffic is hell)
What can ya'll tell me? What can I tell these two? They hit the road in the Honda heading to Cali Wednesday morning at 0800.

Re: LA help!
anywhere north of the El Toro Y is ghetto.
Seriously though I dunno - better they are in west LA than in East LA (juan can tell you about that). Don't get them all worried, but hey it's a big city & it can be dangerous but it can also be really cool, it all depends on the area. Give us a better idea of where they are going to settle (Westwood, Brentwood, etc) & someone could give you a better idea of what that area is like.

Re: LA help!
Thank you, BDJ. I'll have the name of the facility and area where the apartment complex is tomorrow. Cara is from a small town in Georgia. She can throw hay bales in the morning, help birth cows in the afternoon, and perform some hellacious nursing care in an ER by sundown. She is an awesome nurse and my facility is loosing a wonderful employee. Maria is from Canada; she's also a very strong nurse and will make a great employee in the LA facility. She's a quick thinker, great problem solver, and doesn't mind getting deep into a problem case to help out. I'm going to miss them both.
Just because I think someone from Canada is great shouldn't have Draggon and Kulots poking out their chests. Well, maybe kulots...
I told them about my dealing with ya'll on this forum. If they need some help, I may PM some of you and see if ya'll can provide some guidance.

Re: LA help!
BDJ will like this...They will be close to UCLA, which is nicer than the area around USC. If they can afford it, they could always try to live in Santa Monica or Manhattan Beach. Both of those are beach cities and pretty safe, and close to West LA.

Re: LA help!
Trojans?? PLEASE!!
They're definitely beach girls; both have talked about Santa Monica. I'm unsure about Maria, but I know Cara is a die-hard University of Georgia (UGA) girl. They want to see abit of our great country, provide great care to their patients, and have fun while they're in the city.
I know they'll be in town for a minimum of 13 weeks; they may be longer if things go well.
Care speaks Redneck and conversational English; Maria speaks French, English, and conversational Redneck.

When my dad attended USC in the fifties, the surrounding area was mainly old people. When I went, it was all black to the south, and all brown to the north. Don't know what it's like now. USC is across town a good 10-15 miles away, farther if you consider traffic. They wouldn't want to go there anyway.

Re: LA help!
It is most likely Kaiser West Los Angeles Medical Center.
Address: 6041 Cadillac Ave., Los Angeles, CA
look it up on Google map. you can look at the street views.
Not the best part of the world, but there are worse. Good news is that Kaisers don't take walk ins. That means the patients all have insurance. That doesn't mean everyone will speak English. If they speak Spanish that would be a plus at any hospital in SoCal.
Kaiser are getting lots of openings because of the big hospital opening down by BDJ and me. Many employees are transferring and that is why there are openings everywhere.
The best advice is go to a Realtor (Remax). They can find condos and have info on the areas.
If that is the hospital it is not too far from Venice and Beverly. Have them look north and west of that hospital. Stay away from Inglewood.

Re: LA help!
Yeah, not the best of places, but in LA you pretty much have to pick a nationality that you don't mind living to, and pray. Most people that move in from out of state want to live at the beach. That shit gets old like the first year when they realize rent is a lot more cheaper elsewhere. Most then move to Hollywood. It all depends how much $$$ they make and if they want to live on their own.
BH is full of middle eastern people, not the glamour it once was. Hollywood is filled with central americans and other miscelaneous people. Their safest bet is to move as close to UCLA as possible. Face it, USC is in a fucked up part of town. Stay out of the ghettos etc. They'll be fine.
If she is as country as you say she is, she will be miserable here.
Traffic is bad no matter where they live.

The apartment complex is near the hospital; I can't remember the complex name, but it is on some street spelled (I think...) Bloit???
.
The nursing agency they will work for is paying for the apartment; they turned down the Beverly Hills apartment because they were unsure of the travel time. Hollywood was another option they were given.
Cara may be from the sticks, but she's funny as hell and can party in jeans and sandals or wearing a nice dress and heels. She can pull off most anything. Wait! That coulda been a pun....
My girlfriend was their supervisor at the hospital we work at. She and I may have to load up and come to LA and see them.

She's already upset she can't take most of her weapons with her! I've tried to tell her Cali is BS when it comes to personal protection... I gave her a sign reading "Stop! Don't hit me again!", but she didn't see the humor in that one. I guess she sees bullets as being a cheaper, easier solution.
