Passport or what
My son wants go visit gf in Canada,does he need a passport?
He will be picked up at the border if this helps

From my understanding, he will not need a passport to visit Canada; however, he should be prepared to show a government issued photo ID. Personally, after doing lots of travel myself, I'd recommend having a birth certificate with him.
This is based on my past travels, but with some recent changes in returning to the US requirements, things may have changed. Check the US State Department website ( www.state.gov/travelandbusiness) for some answers.

Will a copy of a birth certificate be ok?Also when does the govt give out the
photo ID's I have not gotten one yet,I'll go check out that site,thanks for
the help.

my dad went up there about a month ago and they now require passports, also about the photo ID you have to go to your local dvm and pay for one

I don't think a copy of a birth certificate is acceptable. An original can be obtained from the Dept. of Health, etc. in the state/county where your son was born. There is a good possibility you could obtain the birth certificate via an internet request, etc.
Mags is correct, the DMV can issue the photo ID card; the ID card looks similar to a drivers license. I would guess the cost is around $10-$15.

when I got my son's it cost $17, and each state is different, his last until he is 11, I did some research and its $5 for one year in texas lasting only til his next birthday...
