So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon

for some of us; for others, the $4 mark has come and gone. Just yesterday, I paid $3.73 and I'm in SC. Here, gas is usually around the cheapest in the country.

What are you doing to cope with the increased cost of fuel? Limiting trips? Doing some preventive maintenance and checking tire pressures to increase gpm's? Car pooling to work?

Here's what I've done: a) limited my trips or consolidated trips; b)checked my tire pressures and performed a tune up; and c) slowed my ass down while driving on the interstate.

The other day, an old lady in a minivan honked her horn at me for doing the speed limit! I guess she's not one of the older folks on a fixed income..

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon

well last year i bought a scooter. im going 50mph and getting 70 mpg. i put 5$ in last month and have traveled 100 miles on it and just barely need gas. down side is i only use it when the weather is nice and im making solo trips. taking my gf to work or going places with her still uses the car and its 15 mpg badness. so we are limiting our trips and carpooling when possible.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon

nothing much I can do.

I try to only drive places where I really need to go, and then do multiple errands at the same time.

I get friends to drive instead of me, and buy them drinks.

No one would carpool with me, no one from work lives here and I hate people at work anyway. I hate waiting for anyone.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon

FYI, gas here was 3.93 last week for the cheap stuff, now its 4.05 it doesn't make sense. SA just announced they are increasing production too.

Diesel is over 5 bucks here.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon

jajaja you guys complain, i drive an avalanche 8 cyl... good thing is that I can use ethanol... that brings down the price at least 60-90 cents per gallon over the premium gas... if this thing continues this way i might buy a burro...

I been doing less driving lately, doing more errands at once is easier and save money... the actual problem with the price increase is the increase on everything.. specially food.. yesterday I went to buy some food and 1 gallon of milk (deans) was close to 4 dlls... went for the store brand at 3.29 the gallon...

has any of you guys tried the nitrogen on your tires? they say you save money because of loss of pressure...

I drive a hemi ram quad cab. Little worse than your avalanche. I'm looking into a TDI Volkswagen though.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon

I generally bus to/from work so that caps my work-related travel expenses to $99/month (flat rate for the monthly pass). The problem is that I am doing lots of hiking right now and of course you have to drive way out into the wilds to get to the good hike spots so that's where I'm spending on gas.

I'm a master scheduler and always consolidate all my driving trips into one half/full day so in that sense i don't think there's much more I can improve on.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon

Most of my driving is done in a company truck so I don't have to spend to much. Most nights I get to drive it home so that helps also. I only live 8 miles from work so it wouldn't be to bad anyway. The company has made some changes to save fuel. All non-essential trucks have been replaced with hybrid cars. Our service trucks have been equipped with remote start switches on the crane controls so it is easier to shut down and restart the engine when working.

My wifes car on the other hand is still costing us in fuel. We haven't made many changes to save fuel, but I am looking into installing a dual fuel kit so I can run LPG. Not much better fuel economy, but LPG is cheaper. I've got everything figured other than tank mounting.

I'm not sure what good nitrogen would do in the tires. If you use a regular compressor, your tires have 75% nitrogen anyway. Checking and maintaining your tire pressure would do more good than anything.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon

Glad to see most everyone has tried something, hell anything, to ease the impact. As juana! said, I have noticed an increase in food costs. I expect other costs to rise as transportation companies are forced to pass the increased costs to someone.

Where I live, public transportation isn't an option. The routes are extremely limited and their are only a few buses. Besides, the routes haven't changed even though the center of business and residential areas have. Maybe the increased fuel costs will cause some changes to come about.

kulots: do you have metroparks and hiking areas where you live? There are many in Toledo, OH. You can hike in a variety of environments. No, it's not the same, but may offer a closer alternative.

It's the elevation gain that I'm after, which means I need to go find me some mountainous hikes. If all I needed was the walk then I could do that here but yeah, I need the uphill/downhill stuff.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon

Kulots: just a thought. I'm like you; when I hike, I'm looking for the elevation and the great scenery. Maybe the local areas may work when you're pressed for time??

I spoke about carpooling. Is this taking car pooling to the extreme?

Seriously, is carpooling a help? I don't have HOV lanes in my area. It will not help me there. Also, my work schedule may vary. If there is an emergency in the facility (and it happens alot), I wouldn't have a ride home or my co-worker may twiddle his/her thumbs for awhile.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon

Where I live gas is 3.89 for regular and 4.69 for diesel,me and the wife both drive
I go 5 miles one way to work but she's all over town doing errands for the family.
I'll keep on driving no matter what the gas gets to,I don't do the walking thing.
Here is a cool place I go to check out gas prices (not spam) www.gasbuddy.com

wow i wish we had ethanol here thats a huge savings. some of our gas stations are starting to incorporate up to like 10% ethanol but theres not much of a money savings at those stations.

i think nitrogen is just snake oil and a way for companies to make money. yes it last longer than regular air but how often do you really inflate your tires and how much does it really cost? for a 15$ fill up of nitrogen your better off just filling your tires with air every 3 months and you will still save money.

Re: So... Gas is approaching $4 gallon

I walk to work, around a mile round trip, so I rarely drive anywhere. I also work from home, which requires zero driving as well. I probably fill the tank about every month, on average, sometimes longer. I just filled it up the other day---almost 60 fucking bucks! My next car will either be a hybrid, or at the very least, a car that gets considerably better mileage than my current car--which gets around 24 mpg, in town, and around 31 on the interstate. I have a fairly new car, a 2006 Subaru Legacy, so tune-ups, aren't really necessary at this point, especially with barely over 20,000 miles on it.

On another note, I highly recommend that people at least think about trading in their gas-guzzling truck, or SUV for something more economical if it's feasible. Gas is only going to get more expensive, they're saying that oil could top $200 a barrel by the end of the year. Ethanol is a waste of time, money, and energy to develop, and only adds to the gas price dilemma, because it takes tons of gas to even make ethanol. Not to mention using corn, a primary staple in the American diet, to make the fuel. Also, ethanol actually causes more pollution than regular gasoline!
