Re: Winter soldier v3.0

As I mentioned this winter soldier was modeled after the original winter soldier investigations that was to show that American policies in Vietnam had led to war crimes.

Quote:
Donald Dzagulones,

"We gathered not to sensationalize our service but to decry the travesty that was Lt. William Calley's trial for the My Lai Massacre. The U.S. had established the principle of culpability with the Nuremberg trials of the Nazis. Following those principles, we held that if Calley were responsible, so were his superiors up the chain of command — even to the president. The causes of My Lai and the brutality of the Vietnam War were rooted in the policies of our government as executed by our military commanders."

Verification of participants' credibility

The organizers of the Winter Soldier Investigation took several steps to guarantee the validity of the participants.

Each veteran's authenticity was checked before the hearings by the investigation event organizers, and subsequently by reporters and Pentagon officials. In addition, they also gave specific details about their units and the locations where the events had occurred. Those who wanted to testify were carefully screened by the officers of VVAW, and care was taken to verify the service records and testimony of the veterans. After the severe criticism of the accuracy of Mark Lane's book about atrocities a month before the event, the organizers of the Winter Soldier Investigation made the credibility of the participants a top priority. All veterans participating in Winter Soldier were required to bring their discharge papers (DD-214's) and IDs.

In this connection, the identifying military affiliation of each veteran testifying, including in almost all cases, the dates of service, appears on the roster for each panel that was included with the testimony in the Congressional Record

As noted in VVAW records, each veteran's authenticity and testimony were checked after the hearings by Nixon's "plumbers." Charles Colson was assigned the task. In a confidential "Plan to Counteract Viet Nam Veterans Against the War," Colson wrote, "The men that participated in the pseudo-atrocity hearings in Detroit will be checked to ascertain if they are genuine combat veterans." At one point, the Nixon team suggested in a memo about VVAW, "Several of their regional coordinators are former Kennedy supporters." VVAW was also targeted by the FBI for observation as a possible dissident organization.

Although military documentation was provided, some media organizations such as the Detroit News made further inquiries into the hearings by questioning the authenticity of the testifying veterans. Discharge papers were examined; military records were checked against the Pentagon records; after all their digging, not one fraudulent veteran was found.

The modern winter soldier was planned for the 5th aniversity of the Iraq war, in hopes that the same model could help stop the agression and exportation of our military into an illegal war with a fabricated enemy in a hostile enviroment........

If we are truely intrested in supporting the troops we need to remove them from an enviroment that will destroy their lives and families..

The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan are in the news everyday, as are reports of their effect on the mental health of the men and women serving there. A majority of service members in Iraq and Afghanistan have encountered traumatic experiences and high rates of PTSD and other difficulties have been found.

Quote:
We found that 62% of service members reported receiving some kind of mental health care since returning home from Iraq or Afghanistan. Of these:

11% reported use of medication
13% had individual therapy
12% had group therapy
10% had marital or family therapy
2% had treatment for susbtance use problems
51% were involved in briefings and/or debriefings.

Re: Winter soldier v3.0

What makes me angry is how the candidates and head honchos are so adamant about supporting our troops and veterans, and how compassionate they sound about them. But yet they ignore these heroe's speaking out about the true nature of what is going on over there.

If that doesn't piss you off you've got a serious stick up your ass.

Re: Winter soldier v3.0

I thought 'having a stick up your ass' means that you were easily agitated. It may be more correct to say this: If this doesn't piss you off, you obviously don't have a stick lodged in your rectum, because if you did have a stick in your rectum, I bet you would be much more easily annoyed by the presumed blunderings of our government. I am quite apathetic about the situation, as I realize that the whole truth is unattainable to me. Others are convinced of a truth which they have accepted about the current administration (right or wrong), and are vehemently opposed to everything that is happening in iraq. One thing I'll never quite understand about this is the apparently perscribed reaction of bitching ceaselessly about it. Is that their version of doing something about it??? All it is doing is rallying people who already feel the same way. Most folks lend little credence people who don't express their views in an unemotional manner. People shout and get visibly disturbed over politics, and this is a natural reaction, but it is rarely a benefitial reaction. I can understand being adamant about a cause, but most generally, this adamance is poorly conveyed; and therefore, not well received by anyone other than those who are already convinced. I have to chuckle under my breath when someone screams "George Bush Kills Babies" or something similar. I'm thinking,"Did you want me to listen to something you have to say after that?" It's not even a question of whether or not George Bush kills babies. The question is,"What makes this person think her or she is being effective?" Knowing how to speak to people in a convincing manner is immeasurably more valuable than just being willing and able to speak your mind. I have no time for anyone who doesn't grasp this. This makes me generally unreceptive people who vehemently purvey any message - whether it's about the bush administration, religion, or the unlawfully high price of girl scout cookies. Many people are the same as me in this instance, yet remain silent in this opinion, as it almost always brings some type of drama.
