So I am building a new desktop finally and I have narrowed my motherboard down to 2 different choices, one of them supports ddr3 memory, one supports ddr2. Now as far as price to performance it seems like the ddr2 would be way better for the money, but in the next few years if it goes down and I have to change my entire system just because I didnt want to pay for it now that would suck.
I wanted a gaming motherboard with a good bios, and that is highly overclockable. I have heard that the nforce series are a good choice for north bridge and that the 780 has solved all the previous problems, and has a great bios. The problem is the only asus board that has that Northbridge doesn't support ddr3. Both boards support pci 2.0, and are great boards it looks like. Also if I overclocked some good ddr2 could I get it as fast as some slightly overclocked ddr3 sticks?
Here are the two choices
ASUS MAXIMUS EXTREME LGA 775
Northbridge=X38 Intel
Southbridge=ICH94R
This is the DDR3 board
1. The ddr2 model
Read the specs for the maximus xtreme x38 board here
2. ASUS Striker II Formula LGA 775
Not a ddr3 board but
Northbridge=nforce 780i
built by gamers republic
Both boards have good feedback,
read about striker 2 here
What should I go with, which northbridge would be better and is it worth it to go with the ddr3?
Thanks
