I need some help figuring out what ring size my girlfriend is. She never wears rings. I looked through her jewelry and she has not one ring that i could use as a reference for the size. I want to make the engagement a complete surprise to her when we go backpacking overseas later this year. anyone got any tips on finding out her ring size??

Wait till she's asleep, then wrap a twistie tie around her ring finger and put a mark across both ends with a permanant marker. Then remove, retie to match marking and take it in to a jewler to get it sized. It'll be as close as you can get without her actually trying on a ring...

might be a little too much effort but here goes nothing...

play it off like you've got an art project or something, or that you need some new stuff to hang on the walls. Whatever. Just make it so that you have a negative cast of her hand (she has to do a negative cast of something of yours as well so that she doesn't smell anything fishy) and then of course do a positive cast afterwards and now you've got new "sculptures" for your living space.

Take "sculpture" to ring-maker and voila!

Twist ties, string around her finger, etc are all not very reliable since it doesn't take into account knuckles (i.e. can you slide it on/off your finger if you have a bigger knuckle joint than the actual fleshy part where the ring will sit). Also, you can tie a twist tie or string tighter than usual (remember this part of the finger is squishy and can compress quite a bit) which will make for a really tight fit.

Wow, the sculpture idea is pretty good :o What she said about the knuckle is true though, gotta be careful about that. Let us know what happens!

Hate to break this to you but, the uprise ring is for the movies, not real life. You want her to wear the ring for the rest of her life. She had better like it so go to the jeweler together.

One thing would be to enlist the help of one of her close friends. See if you can get her friend to show her 'adiamondisforever.com' You can then get her tastes.

You could also get a 'cracker jack prize' ring and play around with it one night. Just save it in the right size.

The last thing is that rings can be resized. Get it a little big and buy a chain so if it is too big, she can wear it as a necklace for the rest of your backpacking trip. I say this, because my father's wedding ring is still somewhere in a river where it slipped off during a canoe trip when my parents where married about three weeks.

And with that. Diamonds should be insured, including mysterious disappearance, before they leave the shop. Even if it is a cheap ring, could you afford to replace it? If you do not have home owners or renters inssurance, now is the time.

Is there a way you could just buy her a cheaper ring just to be nice (or say Valentine's day) before you go? That way you can get her sized up properly? It might give her some hints, but it also give her some time to think about it so she doesn't say maybe or let me think about it and ruin your ideal proposal.

tell you how i got some one's ring finger size...

i bind some staples (fastener) and shown it to her as a ring. by then she had no idea i was measuring her ring size. when she wore it, i got an idea of how much to lessen or add to the pattern.
by the time she got her ring, it fitted perfectly.

btw, don't forget to add some "stone(s)" (may it be fancy or real ones), maybe one or three, it would make it look better. (coz they say, rings without stones are meant for weddings)

a couple ideas:

Many, but not all, rings can be resized. It depends on the style of ring you choose. The jewelers can do it with no visible evidence that it's been done. Ask your jeweler about it.

I know of several jewelers will sell the diamonds and place them in a temporary setting and give you credit for the setting when you bring the girl back in, after the proposal, to select the final ring she wants to put the diamond in. It's a win-win because you get to surprise her and she gets to pick the ring (but not the diamond itself). Around here they even advertise calling in ahead of time if to tell the salesman your price range if you don't want her to know.

You could ask her sister or a trusted friend to help out...get the sister or friend to go shopping with her...and just happen to stop in to look at rings to find out their ring sizes.

I tend to agree with the dude who said she has to pick her own ring out if she is to wear it the rest of her life. Unless you really REALLY know her tastes, there lies a great chance you will fuck it up and regret spending 2 months salary on something she hates.

Rings can be resized. Color, clarity, size, and cut cannot.

thanks for the tips everyone. i got no clue what she likes and she can be quite picky with things so i think im going to rethink the plan and get a friend of hers to help me out and find out what she likes before i blow a bunch of $$ because if she dont like it im gonna end up kicking myself in the ass

For serious though, when I gave my wife her ring, it was a size seven with a 'spacer', which was basically a wire inside the ring that could be adjusted so it fit. It was invisible when she wore it, and it worked fine for a few days (I proposed on a trip, so we couldn't get to the jewelers until we got back). BTW, she is a size 4 1/4 I found out later, so even if you're way off, the spacer should make it fit fine until you can get it sized.

As for letting her pick out her own, I always thought that was a stupid idea. This is supposed to be a gift from your heart to symbolize your love. If she is gonna get pissy over the style, instead of jumping for joy and returning said love, there are problems a'brewin.

You have to think about it as something that will be permanently attached to your body for the rest of your life, though. It's not like that sweater that your grandma gives you for Christmas which you only have to wear maybe 3x a year to please her. So if you're TOTALLY off on the style that she goes for, I wouldn't be too surprised if she isn't too happy with it. To me it would be like wearing glasses that always slide down your nose or shoes that are too small, but you can't exchange them for something else...

I don't think you have to exactly match what she has in mind (unless she's one of those who are super picky?). But at least kind of get a feel for her style. Gaudy or understated? Elaborate setting or something simple?

Personal pet peeves about rings in general, which may or may not help: Those stone-holder claws that ALWAYS get caught on fabric or scratch skin, bendy metal that always end up all crooked on me, and rings that are just a smidge too big that they always end up rotating and the stone ends up facing your palm.

My boyfriend gave me a quarter machine ring as a joke once, one that you squeezed to fit on your finger right, maybe you could do that as a joke and when she takes it off take it to the jeweler.
