Changing stripes and picking them.
I mentioned this in another thread, thought it might deserve its own. Politicians do change parties in order to get elected.
Ronald Reagan was originally a Democrat. Hillary Clinton was a Republican. Baseball great Steve Garvey considered public office after his playing days, all he needed to do was "pick" a party to run for. Certainly he had political beliefs before...He never did run. In the early 1980's he divorced his wife and got 3 women pregnant out of wedlock. He forgot to "wear his glove".
About 20 years ago, The California Assembly went Republican. Speaker Willy Brown was going to lose his position. He bargained with an assemblyman to vote for him. The latter soon switched to Democrat and was recalled. Willy did it again, cut a deal with an assemblywoman to stay in. She got booted out too. I think the Democrats regained the assembly next election.
Democratic Texas Governor John Connally in the 60's was in the limo that JFK was assassinated in, and wounded as well. He switched to Republican and was key in helping Nixon win in 1968.
Teddy Roosevelt backed William Howard Taft to succeed him in 1908 but turned against him in 1912. Teddy ran as a Progressive in 1912 and even got more votes than Taft, but the split in Republican votes gave Woodrow Wilson the White House.
George Wallace, a Democrat, switched to Independant in 1968 and hurt Humphrey. He took most of the south, about the time it switched from Democratic to Republican.
H. Ross Perot switched from Republican to Independent in 1992, dooming Bush Sr. and putting Clinton in. He wasn't as effective in 1996, Clinton beat Dole easily.
There are countless more examples in history but think of this...Whatever your party is, is your candidate really representing you, or their interests?

Re: Changing stripes and picking them.
MJ: thanks for the reminders! It just goes to show these folks are what they are: politicians! IT's about staying in office, developing (and keeping) more power, and doing whatever they can to keep a newbie from booting them out of their office. Beneath the stripes, you still have a cat.

Re: Changing stripes and picking them.
I am positive that a few times someone has switched parties, it might just be because their ideas have changed. Yeah, it is certainly plausible that the money may cause them to jump ship, but also, it can be a case of as I have gotten older, some things I used to believe in or represent, just do not make me feel the same. Take Reagan for instance... this Democrat turned Republican... but now backs up embryonic stem cell research which is a liberal stance. Could it be that they are getting paid for supporting that stance or is it more likely that they see the good that can come out of that field of study and think it important to continue?
