Photoshop vs. Paintshop Pro vs. Fireworks
So today we've got three, well two (obvious) big image creator / editors. Macromedia Fireworks, Adobe Photoshop and (something) Paintshop Pro.
Photoshop is basically for what it says, but yet it seems to be the most popular and common for internet users for forums, and just regular images. But according to my computer teacher, it's for what the name says, Photoshop.
Macromedia Fireworks is good for making gifs, and customly made from scratch images. (I'm pretty sure) it can also make animations as well. This program has much more than Photoshop, but can get complex to a new graphic designer, such as myself - yet it's personally my favourite.
Now I can't really say much for Paintshop Pro, as I received a burnt copy from a computer technician, but I really didn't like it - probably because I didn't have the patience, the time, and well - computer knowledge and understanding. I'd say this would be the most basic (other than Paint of course) program to design images.
My choice is Fireworks. simply because I use it more at school, thus I'm learning more.

Re: Photoshop vs. Paintshop Pro vs. Fireworks
Y'know Macromedia is a part of Adobe now, right?

I have been using the cs2 and cs3. It works well, but is not for the beginner. I had to watch 4 hours of tutorial to understand some parts. I guess you have to use them all and decide for yourself. They all seem to get the job done if you know what you are doing.

No mention of the GIMP? It's free, and as far as I know, it can do most of what Photoshop can do. (I have never used Photoshop, so I am not real sure about this.)

Re: Photoshop vs. Paintshop Pro vs. Fireworks
I've been using photoshop for like 10 years now. it isn't just for fixing photos, or playing with them. I did this with a mouse and 2 hours a couple years ago,

haha tablet isn't KEY, though I do want one like mad. I did the little eyeball dude with a mouse. I'm actually better with mice than pens sometimes. Just gotta have a REALLY steady hand and a lazer mouse.
