I have a dell inspiron 6000(which I love). I am runnin XP sp2. For some reason I can play dvd's, but can't play any cd's and can't burn. It also doesn't recognize blank discs of any kind. I feel like may just need to get a new drive, but maybe I am just missing something. I tried reinstalling my original drivers, but it won't recognize the CD and nothing helps online thru dell. The drive is a sony dvd+-rw dw-Q58 which I can find nothing about online. I'm frustrated.

Re: DVD/cdr JACKED UP!!

hmmm ...

i'll assume that you have tried to manually select an mp3 file and tell it to be opened with windows media player .

have you tried using dell's "chat help/support" ?
i have tried to use the online problem/fix database in the past and came up with less than a 50% success ratio .

it sounds to me like a soft/firmware problem as you can play dvd's that are more "touchy" about the accuracy of the optical head . i wouldn't scrap the drive just yet .

ps ... for a quick try at a possible fix , try installing "winamp" .

Re: DVD/cdr JACKED UP!!

I'll give it a shot with winamp. I have had no luck with dell ever. I love their computers, but the support sucks. Well I'll give it one more try and then I'll just get a new one. i just didn't want to throw one out if it was still in good shape.
