A little help with research please?

click on one of our sponsors! OR REMOVE ADS
This may be a bit strange question, but I am curious as to what type of poetry you would like to read. I am posing this question on many forums because I am working on a collection of poetry and I do not wish to write poetry for other poets, but for people, so tell me, what is interesting? Whether you read poetry or not, what topic would you read a poem about? If you can't think of anything, that's fine too, but thank you anyway.

Have a good day!

Mostly children like poems because of the words that rhyme. Maybe you concentrate on topics that kids like.

Re: A little help with research please?

I love dark poetry. Something that envokes feeling, especially that of darkness and true despair. I completely believe that anyone can write a love poem, but very few gifted people can write poetry so raw, and so heartwrenching that you can't help but feel their pain.

Favorite poem: "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson

Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich, -- yes, richer than a king, --
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.

Re: A little help with research please?

Simon and Garfunkle adapted this poem into a song early in their career. One of my favorites, and a catchy tune. I'll post what lyrics I can recall.

They say that Richard Cory owns one-half of this whole town
With political connections, to spread his wealth around
Born into society a bankers' only child
He had everything a man could need; power, grace, style.

(Chorus)
But I, work in his factory
And I curse this life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be
Oh I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

The papers print his picture almost everywhere he goes
Richard Cory at the Opera
Richard Cory at the show
And the rumors of the parties and the orgies on his yacht.
He surely must be happy, with everything he's got.

Repeat Chorus

He freely gave to charity
He had the common touch
We were grateful for his patronage and we thanked him very much
So my mind was filled with wonder when the morning headlines read
Richard Cory went home last night
And put a bullet through his head.

Repeat Chorus

Re: A little help with research please?

That was awesome MJ, thanks a lot for posting it. It's too bad that most kids my age (18-25, I'm 22) are falling away from Simon and Garfunkle. Kids look at me really weird when I jam to Mrs. Robinson in my car driving past cranked loud.
