By now you all have heard the commercials that are telling us to keep legislation and regulation of oil companies in the 70's where they belong...

It blames long lines for gas on past legislation, when it was nothing but a supply and demand issue

API is an orginization of nearly 400 members involved in all aspects of the oil natural gas industry.

The American Petroleum Institute, the oil industry's main trade group, paid Timmons & Co. $200,000 to lobby the federal government in the first half of 2007," reported AP in August 2007. "The firm lobbied on various pieces of legislation dealing with homeland security appropriations, energy policy, taxes, price gouging and other issues. ... Daniel Shapiro, former deputy chief of staff for Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., is among those registered to lobby on behalf of the institute."

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ross Gelbspan blames a 15-year misinformation campaign by the oil and coal industries.

"The point of this campaign was not necessarily to persuade the public that global warming isn't happening," Gelbspan said. "It was to persuade the public that there is this state of confusion."

A 1998 memo by the American Petroleum Institute said, "Victory will be achieved when … average citizens recognize uncertainties in climate science."

To redefine global warming as theory -- not fact -- the industry funded research by "friendly" scientists such as Michaels.

The industry's influence even extends into the White House -- where up until a few months ago a former oil industry lobbyist, Phil Cooney, chief of staff at the White House Council on Environmental Quality, was one of the president's top environmental advisers, editing scientific reports to make global warming seem less threatening.

Re: American Petroleum Institute

I keep hearing a lot about the white house "scientists" editing scientific research. What a brilliant idea.

Re: American Petroleum Institute

I have no doubt the White House had a Hand in this.

Every Politician changes documents to read the way they want them too. Scew the facts just a bit.
Makes no diff if it is Bush or Clinton.
The Congress does the same thing.

All politicians are crooked. The only way to help clean it out is to vote for the NEW ones each and every term.

Get the Old clowns out of Congress.
Vote for a new president every four years, no matter what.

If they stay too long, they have too much power.

Sic 'em, joerockhead!

I don't believe anyone should hold any public office for any long period of time. To me, this is a breeding ground for croniism (sp?) and leads to the great corruption we have seen.

I'm glad to see this post; I hope everyone sees you should listen, learn, question, and (hopefully) make informed decisions on topics.
