Vista back to XP

Hey all! I was trying to go back from vista to windows xp. I installed vista ultimate through here and installed it but dont really like it that much anymore and its annoying with compatibility issues and is just slowing everything down in general. What do I have to do to rollback to windows xp, which is what I originally had on this laptop? Thanks in advance!

Re: Vista back to XP

I was thinking about that. So my system restore CD should fix the problem right? Just have to save everything I need first? Just double checking before I mess everything up lol

Yeah
Just make sure you backup any and I mean ANY files
you need (or think you need)and use your restore cd to reinstall.
Stuff like emails, bookmarks, program files, documents, misc folders and files, etc.

Re: Vista back to XP

i hate system restore CDs from manufacturers
they are loaded with crap programs that bought "the space on that disk"
useless programs that people dont want always end up on a restore CD

fresh reinstall from original OS disk is my prefered route

yea I hate all the added on crap too. I saw a XP crystal or something on here but the link is dead, Id rather install something like that than the manufacturer's disk. Know anywhere I can find a light XP Disc like that?

Re: Vista back to XP

just a little food for thought ...

along the lines as was mentioned above , save the things you think you won't need . items like the display , mouse , touchpad and wireless drivers are really nice to have on hand rather than go looking for them . most manufacturers have the drivers needed on the "restore" disk or a seperate disk . sometimes you can dl the drivers needed from the manufacturers site .

as for the "torrent" and similar methods of obtaining an OS ... be very cautious of these , unless it is from an impeccable source there is a chance of getting a little extra something in the dl (there's nothing like a comp with herpes) .

you can always uninstall the crap programs loaded from the manufacturers disk ... the activation codes will jive as well ... should you have to call MS to activate/validate the xp re-install this is pretty handy . you aint the first person to go back to xp .

there is the little matter of OS updates and a few other items associated with MS . personally speaking , i kind of like being able to update my OS without any concern about getting busted for an illegal copy of an 80 dollar program .

vista is a bloated "fatted calf" OS . it is resource/clock cycle hungry : it has champagne tastes ... it aint gonna work worth a flip if your comp has a beer budget .
there are many sources that will state that the minimum requirements for vista to run effiecently are 1 gig of ram / 2+ to 3 GHz procc (or something along these lines) .

Make sure you get your required drivers before formatting. Especially the internet one.

Re: Vista back to XP

I've actually gotten used to vista.

There are quite a few annoying irks - however in general its not too bad.

The thing that gets me is that I was expected alot more then what vista actually delivered :s

I am starting to support Vista for my job, yet I hate it. I know I need to load it on my PC if I ever expect to learn it, but the whole OS just pisses me off. It really gets annoying to say "yes I want to run this program" every time you start an application. I've wanted to chuck a few of those systems agains the wall while working on them.

When I do install it, it will be dual boot so I can run all the apps I need with XP until they all get compatible.

But I think Microsoft is finding that people really do not like Vista. People are buying it with new PCs, but very few are upgrading to it, and Dell and other venders have had to start shipping new PCs with XP again.

Re: Vista back to XP

I think all of the hype around vista made me expect alot more.

I really really liked xp and only installed vista because it was something new to play with. In hindsight i prefer xp alot more to vista. The only thing stopping me from formatting is the fact that i'm to lazy to do it.

I believe that office 2007 was a step in the wrong direction. At first I liked it but its all the differences from what I'm used to and what worked that was annoying.
