I got a computer given to me.. it's fully stripped so.. it should have no problems.


it's a p3/933 with 256mb pc133 and a ati agp card.

so.. here is the problem.. install xp on wipped drive.. it resets 1/2 way though install and or freezes.. tried different hard drives, video cards, different cdrom drive and ram...

same shit.. Tried to install 98se... works like a charm.. no hickups... no problems. runs smooth

tried to upgrade to xp... reboots/freezing again.

reset/changed all cmos settings... same shit.

Tried installing vectorlinux for a hoot....... HANGS on initial install.

???? wtf?????

don't understand. Obviously it's a hardware problem..

Only thing i haven't tried is a new power supply.. but this one worked fine on another board.

I don't mind using 98se.... but i would perfer xp and the problem is driving me nutz.

Can't find much support on the issue on the web.

only thing i can think of that linux/xp used part of the board/cpu that has a problem?

any help would be apreciated.

Sounds like your install cd to me. Have you tried a different one?

I'm not sure this will help with your problem, but if you are going to run XP you should really get more RAM in there than 256MB, I would double it or even go to 1GB.

Now, are you installing from a bootable CD? If not you should, and make sure to reformat the HD partition you are installing it onto as part of the initial process.

Also, if you are installing XP you really ought to start with an install disc that has service pack 2 in it.

EDIT: bzg has stated the most obvious first step as well - check that install disc for scratches and/or smudges & if it is irreparable, try another.

if you feel it is not the disc try putting the hard drive in another computer and install xp on it there, that way you will figure out the problem. If u can't install it it is the disc, if you can then it is something else in your pc i.e not the hhd or the disc. Try it out. Plus Backdoor Jesus is correct you should put some more ram inside the comp but check your motherboards MAX first. hope you are able to sort it out

Tried 2 versions of "hacked" bootable xp's (one is sp2)... both no go..

tried my oem XP(actual copy)... and same result.

Disabled ALL intergrated perifs in the bios.. (serial, usb, audio, floppy,etc)

and tried again.. got further!!!...... wayyy further.. but still it locks up solid.(no keyboard action).

I am booting from cd only... no disks.. every time i do a format( tried removing partitions also).

just for a hoot.. tried my bootable win98cd(actual also)... and guess what.. it works...

pos computer.... I was informed today the person who gave it to me.. got rid of it cuz it kept freezing..

fan is fine.. and cpu is not hot.. runnin all day..

can you try to install xp through win98, as in put the disk in when on win98 os then go throught the installation like that.

cd-rom drive might be the problem or fan not cooling cpu or messed up hard drive
