My first computer

I think that this should make for quite a decent computer. I am almost positive that I will switch to the Q6700 when the price drops, I just hope that that happens on monday for newegg because I don't want to have to buy from more than one retailer. Well, here goes a few more questions.

Do I need two optical drives? I seem to get the impression that most people put two in their computers?

Also, I am not entire sure about the power supply. It seemed to get largely positive reviews. A few people mentioned needing a 4-pin to 8-pin adapter. I just don't know if it has enough/right kind of connections. Also according to http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine I need something like 650W and if I eventually add another video card I would need 750. This seems really high.

Raptor 150 GB should be enough for vista plus most applications? remaining drives combined in RAID for data? I seem to get the impression these drives fail a lot and run really hot?

Netgear router for Wii(SD card too)/laptop. I have heard linksys doesn't work well with torrents and I'm pretty sure this is a good one that will.

Also since a few of the components are OEM are there any connectors that I will need to buy? Like should all of the power connectors come with PSU and Sata cables, etc. with mobo?

I changed the monitor from what I originally had and I think this is a much better one for only like $20-30 more.

Thanks a lot guys you've been a real help.

Thanks a lot again.

Re: My first computer

two optical drives are good to have ... a real help if you are ripping and burning .
also , there is redundancy ... if one craps out , you are not dead in the water . drives are cheap enough these days .

personally , i'd duck my head when it comes to anything labeled "samsung" .

I added both of these $17 and $32 respectively.

It seems a bit excessive and I'm concerned about the power supply as it is, so I don't know if I should get both of them.

Re: My first computer

Well two are not really need but useful for copying cd's and burning more than one cd at a time. But i find that most people don't do this often, if u need to copy then u can always use iso programs or similar. If u are worried then just get a bigger powersupply, i think 700 will be enough though although i know the other video card will need 750 but it should be fine.

I have a netgear router but i love my old belkin, i broken a few times over 4yrs but the lifetime warrenty was great every time it broke they just send u a new one, plus they are really easy to portforward and configure.

If u have any money left get some accessories like speakers, gaming keyboard, laser mouse, memory card reader, LED's etc. have a little fun.

note: it is a serious matter, it will not be un if u don;t have a working pc.

Re: My first computer

with that much in the case I would recommend a better powerstrip. spike protection isn't something to skimp on because one spike and there goes your $500 proccessor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16812120233 should be good.

I would also reccomend better quality memory. g.skill hasn't been arround for very long so I don't know how good they are. personally I run ozc memory and havn't had any issues with it. I reccomend 4 of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16820227123

Personally I'm not a big fan of the moniter. 2 reasons: normally their products are subpar, and built in speakers SUCK. for $20 more you can get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16824009094

Power supply is fine by the rating but I don't care for the propritary connection system used there. if you need more cables a local compuer shop isn't going to have them you will have to special order them.

I would also recommend a logitec keyboard and mouse over the default microsoft stuff. If you are going to spend that much on a graphics card shouldn't you spend the money to have percice control of what you are doing? Logitec speakers are also awesome if you are looking for those. like I said before don't run with built ins the are worse than headphones. These are what I have and for the money you can't beat em: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16836121126
Looking at your motherboard I don't think you should need the 4-8 pin adapter but I could be wrong. Also I would look for sata dvd burners because it is alot easier to setup with sata, plus the wires are alot nicer to run and look at, and it's cheaper for the same drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16827135145 and really if you want 2 drives I would get them both the same for consistancy basis, and if one dies you have a backup burner.

hope this helps.
