Since this seems to be a diverse community including many different types of drug users (as well as sober people), I will post a question I have been trying to answer for myself and hopefully gain a little insight.

I am neither advocating or discouraging the use of drugs (I include legal substances such as alcohol in this category).

My question is: Why do you think you began intentionally ingesting intoxicating substances for recreational purposes?

This applies to the first substance you used whether it be alcohol, marijuana, nutmeg, DXM cough syrup, crack cocaine, or anything else even cigarettes. It makes sense to skip by any experiences you do not believe really effected you to a great degree such as stealing a sip of beer when you were a kid or taking a drag of a cigarette you picked up off the street, rather tell about the start of a long term pattern of use.

Apropriate answers could be: peer pressure/conformity, curiousity, scientific research, depression, anxiety, stress, boredom, nothing better to do. If you don't know/remember then say so.

Any answer is fine. I know it is probably complicated for everyone and most of us don't understand it. Feel free to be brief or very long if you have the time.

My answer

I started smoking marijuana in my early teen years. The strange thing was that I had no close friends that used the drug at that time yet I had a stong desire not only to try it but to become a full blown "pothead".

I had more knowledge about it before I started than many do after years of smoking thanks to the internet and a strong curiousity. Since I could not acquire it for several months I would even go as far as smoking things such as leaves and incence just to get the feel of smoking (Sad, I know).

I guess I just wanted the image of being a rebel. I saw that some of the greatest musicians, artists, and counter-culture icons used drugs and I wanted to have something in common with them. I also had emotional and social problems and felt that being a drug user would both aid in my acceptance by the "cool" kids as well as give me an excuse for being a lazy, antisocial... loser I guess is the word I'm looking for.

Maybe someday in another post I will let you all know how the next 10 years have gone.

Well I could write much more but that would probably make this even more unreadable. I'm hoping I get some good replies but if I am out of place here please let me know.

I started smoking in grade 7, got introduced by my friend who was a coke dealer/user.
I never really had an excuse to blaze, I just found it fun to blaze with people and get to know them better.

In high school, I started smoking less and less weed because it got boring.

i started smoking weed because of curiousity and because my friends were having such a blast with it. i used to basicly just make daily life funner.

i started try the dxm stuff because i wondered what all the syrup hype was about.. and its not really that cool.. as are many of the big drugs in high school.

i started doing shrooms because i loved the idea of hallucination and what not... and it turned out to be amazing... i thought there couldnt be anything better.

i started trying dramamine because i had found it on erowid and read about its insane, realistic hallucinating of the drug... blew my mind.

i started doing LSD because it was my one of my goals when i started doing drugs.. and i did it.... and OMG AMAZING, its a MUST try drug..... just wow. go out and buy some NOW.

i started trying hydro codiene and other painkillers because i heard the feeling was just amazing, and its ok... doesnt beat LSD tho.

I started smoking weed because a hot older girl invited me over her place to smoke with her. I was about 15.
I started using shrooms because they were on my list of OK drugs (from nature) and I wanted to see what it was like to see things that aren't really there. Little did I know that I would have such a deep and personal expereince that completely changed I view my life and the world, for the better. Highly recommended, especially for god fearing people, you'll understand and get closer to god then you ever thought you could. Native Americans said it was a window into the spirit world, which I think might be true.

First of all I have to say that this is good thread. I hope more people answer.

Now. I started smoking when I was about 10. I lived a bad neighborhood and hung out with older kids who I though were cool, and I would do anything to impress them. I started selling soon after, which put me in contact with all types of stuff. I have experimented with just about everything I came in contact with short of heroin, mainly so that the people I was with didn't view me as being too different. Different where I come from can get you beat down or worse, killed. The drugs that I continued to use over time and through college (coke, meth, X, weed, and any pill I could swallow) were mostly used to enjoy the weekends with friends and hopefully would lead to scoring with the next hot chick. Also it just seemed normal considering everyone around me was doing it. I am now in the military and haven't used anything a while, but sometimes I miss the good ole days when I could smoke away without any fear of losing my career.

I almost forgot huffing... when I was young and had nothing to do. i used to huff anything from glue to gas. Stupid, but somewhat effective and easy to get when broke.

Started smoking weed around age 14 --- going into highschool and all. First time I smoked I was with all people who have never smoked either. We were smoking my friends dad's bowl from like 1980 that he found, and the first hit I took, I coughed so bad I blew all the weed out of the bowl (heh). Still smoke to this day and never regret it. Its my drug of choice and it really mellows me and all my friends out when we need to just chill.

Mushrooms did first at age 16. I was starting to get into the 'hippie' scene at the time, and after reading alot of stuff at shroomery.org and getting some info from older friends, I really wanted to take them, so I did. Now I've done them over 10x so far, and 'almost' everytime has been an enjoyable and enlightening experience. The almost is because one time me and two of my friends (while we were peaking), were all hitting golf balls into the lake behind my house. My parents were gone for the week so we knew it would be a safe house. However, while we were all f'ed up, one of my friends walked behind my other friend and he smacked him right in the face with golf club. He lost 2 of his teeth and we started freaking out cause he was bleeding so much. Actually, first I couldn't stop laughing, and when I say couldn't stop, I mean I don't think I ever laughed so hard to this day. Seeing my friends face, all contorted and missing 2 teeth. God. Well to make a long story short, we just waited till the trip was over (after calming my friend down), and told his mom that we were playing football and he took an elbow to the face. She took him to the hospital and all was well. Mushrooms I never regret taking, and I think I will revist them every now and them throughout my life.

Coke, I did only a few times because it was free at the parties I was at, and I don't really like it or care for it. It doesn't really relax me, is way too expensive (even though I never paid for it), and seems unnatural to me. Thumbs down for me!

XTC, I've only done once. I didn't really 'want' to try it, but I was peer pressured into it. It was cool and whatever. Not really my thing but I could see how people like it. And again, seemed unnatural to me (I only like things that can grow on this earth).

LSD I have never tried, but I think I would give it a whirl sometime.
