RV vacation, good idea?

click on one of our sponsors! OR REMOVE ADS
Hubby and I are arguing over summer travel plans. I want to go to Hawaii, he wants to do the road trip thing in a rented RV. I looked into it, for 10 days of travel (including the rental of the RV and mileage), we are looking at about $1800. That's not even including gas! To me, that is alot of money. I dunno, it would be nice to see the scenery, but I can't imagine sleeping on the side of the road, and emptying out the shitter

Has anyone ever done this?

Re: RV vacation, good idea?

It could be fun Shizz. RV'ing is not like camping, it's like having your hotel room wherever you go. Pretty quiet inside, a real bed to sleep on, kitchen, fridge, TV. It's OK, really. Plus lots more "family time" while you're on the road. Anyway if you guys are arguing over anything it should be what is a better destination, Hawaii or road trip destination ___________ . The RV is just your accommodations, not your vacation. And yeah I have done it before, but I'm an ex-Deadhead so I've camped/RV camped/mini-pickup truck camped in lots of places & the coolest were the RV trips. Yes you get the double-entendre there.

Re: RV vacation, good idea?

combine the two... drive to hawaii

seriously though, I have a way better idea: take a cruise. Depending on where you live, a cruise can be a very economical way to go. I went on a 7 day caribbean cruise, and with airfare from southern california, it was only $1300 a person. All the food is included, and there are ZERO extra costs that you have to pay. Of course you can do shore excursions and spend tons of money doing activities, but that comes with ANY vacation.

If you live near a coast, you can take a cruise from that coast to somewhere and save money on airfare.

For example, I'm probably going to go on a cruise in august and leave from long beach, ca (around an hour or so from me). It is going to be under $500 per person for a 4 day cruise to mexico.

Not a bad way to go!

Being stuck on a ship does not sounds fun in any way to me, even if you do get to get off at port. God, I am such a vacation snob!

ETA: Actually, I am not a snob. Jeff and I have NEVER been on a "vacation" in the 9 years we have been together. Sure, one or two bed or breakfast weekends, but never a let's pack the kids and go for a week vacation. If I am going to spend a decent chunk of money on it, I really want to make sure it's something we are all going to enjoy.

Re: RV vacation, good idea?

cruises are not like that at all

you're never "STUCK" on the ship... there is TONS of stuff to do onboard like games, shows, etc... there are family friendly activities, and then audlts only stuff too

Usually there's less than a day between ports, so you don't have a lot of time "on the ship" anyway

from previous experience, I actually left the ship at each port, and I probably would like it more if I stayed on board- there's movie theaters, sometimes tennis and shuffleboard... just lots of random stuff going on all the time

plus pools and spas of course.

I have done both and it all depends on what it is that you are looking for, either one would be fun, I would go with RV, the kid can join in all the fun, not the whole, you aren't old enough thing.

Re: RV vacation, good idea?

If you get a chance look up Natchez Mississippi. The natchez trace is also a great drive, but be sure to have plenty of gas as there are NO GAS STATIONS, its just woods from natchez to nashville. If and when you get to natchez try Fat Mama's Tamales, Magonolia Bar and Grill, and Pig Out Inn. I tried to find there websites hope they work. For Jackson try amerigos and kyoto's. Be sure to stop in starkville which is about 20 minutes from the trace and go to petty's bbq. Good luck

The midwest is awesome. The Black Hills, yellowstone, Dinosaur natl. Its a really nice drive.

$1800? Why not just go to Europe?
