James Ellroy?
Does anyone here like James Ellroy?
I'm still waiting for the next book after The Cold Six Thousand.
Just wondering if anyone else here digs his books.

I've never heard of him...
I think I'll look him up...

Re: James Ellroy?
He writes sort of fictional history. What I mean by that is his last couple of books- American Tabloid and The Cold Six Thousand- dealt with fictional events surrounding the assassinations of the Kennedy brothers and Martin Luther King. His storylines are very intricate and his prose is very original and sort of jazzy in its rhythm. I can hardly bring myself to put his books down whether I'm reading or re-reading them. I highly recommend him. He also wrote the novels and screenplays for LA Confidential and the Black Dahlia. But the films didn't even come close. The Black Dahlia would be a great book to start off with if you've never read him before- but probably only if you haven't seen the film.

Re: James Ellroy?
Thought LA Confidential and Killer On The Road were masterful works of art.

Re: James Ellroy?
Discovered him back in the mid-90's and tore through American Tabloid, LA Confidential and the Black Dahlia in short order. Actually I listened to the books on audio tape during the work commute every day. None of those prepared me for the wallop of My Secret Places, his autobiography and the story of his quest to find his mother's killer. He's one of those authors who's experienced a lot of the depravity he writes about. Whew, what a life.

If you liked James Ellroy's 'My Dark Places' and you haven't already, you should really check out Edward Bunker's 'Education of a Felon.' One of my favorite autobiographies of all time (in 3rd place after Henri Charriere's 'Papillon' and 'Banco.'

Right...My Dark Places. I'll check the other one out sometime. I'm deep in a Jerry Bledsoe book at the moment, 'Blood Games'.
