external hardrives
Hey everyone can anyone tell me about ext. hardrives? I was going to get one but a friend told me that they all corrupt files after a short time of use and will render a computer useless is this so? If not, what brand is a good value ? I have a Gateway low profile computer are there any internal hardrives for these comps? Thanks in advace, Jabber

Re: external hardrives
heh ...
a simple answer to the data corruption is to NOT let your friend near your comp ! obviously he uses external hd's for door stops and wheel chocks !
businesses have been using them to back up their data to be physically removed from the area for safe keeping .
there are several external hd's and associated software out there ... the best choice depends on what your system will/does support and your budget .

Re: external hardrives
I bought a 300 Gig Seagate Ext HD a few weeks ago on sale.
I think it is fantastic!
Just plugged into a USB port and it was working in no time at all
Now I have a place to store all my mp3's, pics, etc
and get them off my laptop's 60gig drive!!

Re: external hardrives
I suggest a western digital and then as soon as you get it format the drive to remove the backup software that comes with it. The my books are really nice and a 250 gb can be found at newegg for under 90 bones

Re: external hardrives
Yeah, nothing wrong with any make of ext HDD thesedays, just look out for one that advertises low noise, my WD sounds like a traction unit. Keep your friend away from your PC.

Re: external hardrives
Seagate are good vheap ones my favorite are maxtor11 they can be password protected. if you have old internal hard drives you can purchase boxes that convert to external usb or firewire

Re: external hardrives
I've had a seagate for a while and have never had a problem yet. use it mainly for mp3 storage, but keep backups just in case.

Re: external hardrives
I've been using a WD Passport for a while, so has my sis, no problems yet.
Don't forget to re-format it to NTFS and back-up the info on the drive.
Synctoy is a great way to sync data btw.

Re: external hardrives
I wouldn't worry too much about brand. Probably more important is what you are going to do with it and what interfaces it has.
They have various combination of these interfaces:
SATA: super duper fast. Like being internal
Firewire 800: super fast.
Firewire 400: Very consistently fast. Good enough for multi channel audio recording
USB2: Inconsistently fast. Good for streaming audio or video and backups
USB1.1: Unusably slow for must things, even backups.

Re: external hardrives
i have a 80 gig wd for my music, and a 200 gig for other various stuff. I will not leave much at all on my computer hard drive. I agree with the dude that said dont let your buddy use it.

Re: external hardrives
I have a WD thats over 3 years old and never had a single problem with it. I've carried in it bags, through an airport, dropped it accidently one time and it still works just fine.
