Execution of Saddam

Well it was official as of 3 hours ago that Saddam was executed in Iraq. Personally I don't really see how this is going to change anything regarding the situation in Iraq.

What do you guys think? Opinions?

Re: Execution of Saddam

i completely disagree. look at the people reaction over there. i definately believe things will change, those people don't know anything but hatred and murder over there. and the biggest tyrant, the guy who basically started, things should definately change

It has two good points. One it takes away the possibility of Saddam returning to power. These might suppress some of the problems that may be attributed to his followers. They may have thought if things were bad enough he might have been returned to power. Secondly, it will give the iraq people that are acting like ostrich with thier heads in the sand a chance to support thier goverment.

There's still a great possiblity of a civil war as long as the people there keep divided on a basis of religion. If we fail in leaving Iraq without a strong goverment in power, Iraq is going to become another Iran run by religious fanatics.

Two wars, 15 years, a trillion dollars, a ravaged country, and thousands of American lives later. I am starting to have some doubts that it was all worth it.

Re: Execution of Saddam

im not a great supporter of the death penalty because it is so final
like i said in the death penalty thread
South Africa wanted to exicute Nelson Mandella because he was to be considered a beast for his crimes against humanity
but someone stopped them and said maby one day we will need him to quell the natives
and they were right
he transformed this country into something fantastic when he got voted in 12 years ago
but Nelson has very little ego sadam is just an aggressive man so i doubt he would have quelled violece more likly to incite

but still besides the fact that he could have maby become helpfull
(i know he is guilty) but i dont think his trail was very fair (but then again he wasnt a fair man)
so im stuck on the edge here
i dont know how to feel about this
but i can certainly say the violence wont just stop now he is dead

i think he was killed to just get him out of the way
if a death sentance is imposed i think it should be as retribution for familys
not just to remove a person from the chance of ever getting his power back

i am always saddened by death

Taking the blood of a tyrant in no way repairs the damage that he has caused the country. It however does seem to provide justice to the families that had loved ones killed as a result of his brutal rule.

As for will it change the tone of the situation in Iraq?

As for Iraq changing now? No. I believe Iraq is either going for civil war as rivial factions war over control of Iraq, or there will be a long reconsturction process in order to repair the harm that is done.

I'm not one of those conspiracy crazed people, but other than the "leaked" videos and pictures, what if he's not really dead? I mean he got thousands and thousands of people masquerading as him while he was alive, but whatever shoot them all and have God sort them out.

Re: Execution of Saddam

I love and support our troops till i die!!!

BUT the people of most of the middle east have been fighting for many many years and we will not stop it. Is the iraq war worth all of the deaths? who will really know....we as citizens do not have all the info the govt does. We have killed many terrorists hiding away...for our 3000+ killed and many wounded plus all of the innocent people. Before we judge as a nation we need all the facts, and for now only the govt has that info.
