the WW3 thread got me thinking
What do you think is the secret to the fact that United States hasn't had a violent separatist movement since the Civil War?
Why is it that seemingly everywhere there is a civil unrest or different groups are heavily conflicting with one another. Take Spain and Basqs, UK and IRA, Chechnya, Mexican conflict of 1994 where there was a military uprising. Then, of course, Quebec and the rest of Canada (granted Francophiles are not killing Anglophiles up there).
And of course, Middle East, Africa and South America, where no government has seemingly lasted past 10 years.
Any thoughts why is there civil rest in the US?

Re: the WW3 thread got me thinking
I think a big reason why our government has lasted as long as it has is primarily due to two things:
Our system of checks & balances between executive, legislative & judicial branches is one.
The fact that our government is able to evolve as time goes by is another.
Not a whole lot of governments out there that can do both of those things successfully...the ones that do last a long time.
I would even go so far as to disagree with your citing the UK as an example of a country dealing with a serious civil unrest problem inasmuch as I think that their problem with the IRA is no different than our country's war with Al Quaeda.
I actually think that the UK shares many of the traits of our own government (go figure) and as such I would consider them as successful as we in maintaining "civil rest", as you call it.

Re: the WW3 thread got me thinking
I don't think we are the only country that has maintained civil peace for long periods of time. People have brought up Britain (UK), and there are others that seem to have maintained long bouts of peace--I also think of Japan (WWII and subsequent change wasn't considered civil unrest), Australia, bits of Western Europe (does Iceland count? Granted, I'm not an expert in Icelandic history).
As for the US, I think we have maintained a fair amount of peace for a long time because of our stable and relatively flexible government (I don't know if the Civil Rights movement counts as civil unrest, because although it was often peaceful there was a lot of violence, unrest, radicalism and change going on there). So, yeah, I think it is thanks to our government.
Our government keeps everyone in line, in a good way, despite the fact that we are a melting pot--a lot of other countries that have maintained long bouts of peace are often really similar (in terms of culture, race, etc.).

Re: the WW3 thread got me thinking
A lot of good facts have been stated.
You also have to take into account that we area country that is still full of work.
Unemployement it the biggest cause if unrest.
The nice thing is, we do not have a perfect society. We have problems and issues that need to be dealt with, so it is a work in progress. Hopefully, it will stay strong for another 150 years.

Re: the WW3 thread got me thinking
any thing to do with each of your states having their own laws and being governed like a country in a country, so that you can pretty much live where you want and where you dont want and live the life you see fit in accordance with these laws. which is i think a pretty fundamental part of society. if its not that its the finger on the abomb thing. under any other president i dont think you would have to worry but could you put it past bush from pointing that thing your way? just an outsiders point of view.

Re: the WW3 thread got me thinking
It could also be that we are myopic and ignorant, fat like cattle before the slaughter.... We don't question anything... No one here thinks for themselves... We have been a nationalist society, post civil war, and spend A LOT of money on propoganda... I never questioned anything til the war in the middle east(the current ones), and cheered just like everyone else about freespeech and being the best country in the world... Now I have educated myself, and when I speak to others I hear statements like, "the US is not perfect, but we are better than any other country.'... With that I ask where else have you been and the answer is usually no where, and then I point out that is a programed responce from internal propoganda, and people just get uncomfortable and stop talking to me....
