Democrate Calling for Draft
So Senator Rangel of New York is looking to reinstate the Draft.
First - Why?
Of curious note, he is the Chairman of the Tax writing committee.
Second - He said this - "I don't see how anyone can support the war and not support the draft. I think to do so is hypocritical"
I support the War, but not a draft. I am NOT a hypocrite, I am smart.
As a Member of the free choice to JOIN the Us Military for over 25 years, I have met some bad apples. He Draft will simply increase the number of anti War, insolent, unwilling people serving. Men and Women that have no desire to be in the military will simply do anything and everything they can to disrupt and discourage war operations.
This is a STUPID Idea!!! It is STUPID!
Yes, the numbers of active member's is lower then in previous years.
Yes, Men and Women are going back for tours they did not plan on going for.
Yes, it sucks.
This is no reason to really jack things up.
Way was this never brought up before, it is not something he thought up last week. He had been planning this for months. Just waiting until the DEMs had congress.
If anyone thinks this is a good idea, then they have not spent time in the military working with willing volunteers, as well as Unwilling members.
I hope like hell this STUPID idea fails!!

Re: Democrate Calling for Draft
this stupid idea has been brought up almost every year since the draft was uninstated. not just by Dems but by republicans too. it will never happen. there is too much controversy and lack of support. also, there are plenty of troops to support the ongoing war, which i so happen to not support. not only active troops but in the reserves and national guard. no reason to reinstate the draft...but it will just keep coming up. i promise.

Re: Democrate Calling for Draft
I dont think it will happen. I can see the draft being re instated right at the get go but not now. The war has gone on way to long. We should have already pulled out. Now we are fighting a losing battle. I served 2 tours over there and even then couldnt justify being there.

Re: Democrate Calling for Draft
I salute you drktitan56, glad you made it back home ok.
The reason the draft is being brought again is not to actually reinstate it, but to make those war supporting politicians think about going to war twice before sending our troops into harms' way. The resolution will not pass, as even most dems are against it. It will however, bring some light on the obscure issue of the disproportionate amount of minorities and low income folks serving in the armed forces.
I guess the slogan could be support the troops, join them! Maybe then all the stupid walmart yellow ribbon sportin' cronies would get a sense of what it actually means to support our troops.

Re: Democrate Calling for Draft
Title is misleading ... "Democrat Calling for Draft" is much more truthful rather than saying the entire party is calling for a draft. Obviously the measure has not had any support by the party as evidenced by the refusal of others to come forward an put their name on this proposal.
And I agree .. this is a terrible idea which is why it will never pass.

Re: Democrate Calling for Draft
I was asked to consider rejoining a year after I got my medical discharge but said no. I was in the marines. The recruiter I talked to says that they are wanting anyone who is 35 or younger and is in good health to join.

If the draft is reinstated won't that just crumble our economy once again? Who the hell would think this would be a good idea?

I have only been in the Army for 10 years but I agree with what you say 100%. There are so many guys that come through here that cry and bitch because they don't want to be deployed. I would rather fight beside the people who want to be there with me.

Re: Democrate Calling for Draft
There is no way any party that wants to get elected would reinstate the draft. If there were actually a reason for us to go to war, like defending nations that are being invaded, people would sign up in droves like they did in WWII.
Though I obviously don't support our current reason for going to war, I support our guys and think we should pay them more for combat duty than we are now. Maybe if we gave less money to Halliburtan...

Agreed. As a U.S. Marine living the barracks life I've seen so many that have chosen to join and don't want to bee here anymore slack off. Why would we make so many more that don't want to be here from the start do the same. It's a waste of money to train them and I don't want to be clearing a house with a marine that isn't dedicated to the job and is gonna flake out and leave me alone.

Re: Democrate Calling for Draft
I have heard from certain folks I know (one a green beret) that conscripts are never a good idea, because they spend most of their time trying to find a way out, and their hearts are not in it. They are the ones that end up getting shot first because they don't feel committed in the first place. Instead of forcing people into wars because we don't have enough troops to finish a conflict, I think it makes more sense to be selective about what conflicts we get into in the first place, and maybe not risk the lives of well-trained, committed individuals so frivolously, so we have them alive and ready when we really need them.
In case you're wondering, yes, I am predominantly anti-war and would not voluntarily join any military service, so take my response with a grain of salt if you see the need. However, I do realize that there are times when war is inevitable, and I say that that's the appropriate time to act. I don't believe that Iraq was a necessary conflict, and to force people into military service to fight in this war goes against every fiber of my conscience.

Re: Democrate Calling for Draft
The armed forces need motivated, well-trained professionals rather than victims of conscription who resent being in the military.
The suggestion that the draft could be successfully re-introduced nowadays is just ludicrous, particularly when it is to bolster the most disastrous misadventure in US foreign policy since Vietnam.
It may be more appropriate to force every senator and congressman to serve a short term of duty so that they are more aware of the consequences of their voting to send their troops into combat.

If you are anti-war and wouldn't sack up to join a military service, then how in any prescedent can there be a purpose for war for you?
I fought in afghanistan and Iraq for my family, and the comrades to my left and right. Unfortunately the end result of my brothers-in-arms blood spilt, is that you can have a twisted view such as yours.
Enjoy your freedoms, for they have been paid for with blood of others worth infinitely more than a single drop of yours.
I believe with the current conflicts ongoing that better calls made at higher levels would make much more of a difference than simply throwing more grunts into the mix. The last thing I would have needed is to have to worry about a variable like a draftee.
It would show some true colors in this nation with regards to who ran from it vs stood up and did what their nation required.
If the draft ever does get reenacted, it needs to be wide sweeping. No ways of getting around it, and if you don't go when your number is called your citizenship is pulled.
If you ain't willing to fight for your rights, I don't care where you go, but as far as I am concerned you can't stay here.
