China next super power?
There is a lot of talk about china being the next super power and i wanted to hear your opinon on this case. they say that in 20 years they will have the most power in the world. With their intense education and faster technologies, its leaving USA in the dust. my opinion is i think its gunna happen and i think it will probably start another cold war...maybe.

Re: China next super power?
way back in college, i had a professor who was an expert on China. He pointed out that China was only consuming a fraction of the world's products back then (based on population), and one day they would want their fair share. I can't see them leaving us behind though, not in our lifetime. However, if they need something to grow (oil), who is to stop them from taking it?

Re: China next super power?
They're not gonna be a superpower than can really stand up to us until they get missles they can fire beyond the range of southeast Asia. If they ever start getting close to that, I think the U.S.A would step in. They also don't have an oceangoing navy, so even their conventional can't project farther than they can drive.

Re: China next super power?
If china drafted 1:10 people into their army, they'd be more than double ours. They have the market cornered on electronics, which means guidance and targeting. With the size of their populace they could easily attract any companies seeking to build nuclear power plants, which can easily converted to weapons grade.
Economically, their country is expanding in leaps and bounds everyday. Their rigid educational structure ensures brilliant minds are being popped out in the thousands. China will be the super power of the 21st century.
And I for one would be thrilled to not have everyone pissed at the US for being the big kid on the block.
And hopefully if China comes up that far, they'll pull most of asia with them.

Re: China next super power?
China is eventually going to come into its own as a major world power; that fact is inevitable. For Hundreds of years they were far more advanced, better organized, and more powerful than any other empire in the world. Everyone always talks about the great Roman Empire, but the Chinese empire that remained unified under a single Emporer until about 100 yrs ago dwarfed that. Their relatively recent (past 200 yrs or so) weakness is really just a blip in a long history.
As to their current status and speculation as to their future, I think that we still have a while to go before they really come up to par with Western society. You constantly see fear mongering on the part of the press when you hear anything about China, ala they are gobling up resources and they will quickly become a rival super power to the US and threaten our interests and safety. But the truth may be that all their economic growth is a house of cards. They have major major problems with their banking and financial systems that have yet to be rectified. And, despite their massive population, the vast majority of Chinese aren't reaping the benefits of the economy, because well over half the population of China consists of the rural poor. Another very challenging issue that they are going to have to confront is how do they reconcile their increasingly capitalist economy, and the millionaires it is creating, with the fundamental philosophical principles of their communist authoritarian government? Its hard to tell the poor farmers/workers that they are the foundation of Communism and revolution when the government supported industrialists are driving around in mercedes in the cities. We talk about a wealth gap in this country, well it is far worse in China, and a lot of Chinese resent the hell out of it.
Needless to say, they have a lot of obstacles to overcome. China is still trying to define itself. When they eventually get it together I don't know that we should really be afraid of them. They and their culture are very foreign to Americans, so we fear what we don't know. Hopefully future cultural, economic, and diplomatic exchanges will ease that tension and allay Americans' fears.

Re: China next super power?
You see i dont know if China is going to be the worlds next super power. Economically they are very stout there is no hiding that fact. You also have to remember though that China is one of the worlds poorest countries per capita, as of right now they cant support there population and some people have predicted that china will go bankrupt within the next 30 years. As for them being an economic super power i believe its very possible personally, i do think they will be a super power in terms of economy. Militarily will they ever be the super power that the United States is? No its simply not happening. China is very vulnerable in terms of invasion unlike the United states where we have no threats to the north or south, and east/west we are seperated by the great oceans.
India in my opinion is a sleeper to become a super power IMO. India and China will eventually go to war again so china has that to worry about as well. China and India are disputing land which both sides consider "holy", so dont be surprised if they end up going to war in the future, theres just always been bad blood between the 2 of them...

Japan. For a while, they did alright too. They just couldn't match the resouces the US could use for waging war...
...China can. I doubt there would ever be an actual armed conflict between the US/China, but I do believe they will become a superpower within our lifetimes. They have a population roughly 4 times as large as America, correct? If the growth they have seen recently continues, they may very well have more economic might than the US.
And the worst part... we've done it to ourselves because our desire for cheap t-shirts, electronics, and knick-knacks has helped build their economy! Yay for cheap foreign labor, right?

Re: China next super power?
China could very well become the next super power. The middle class is growing and the "Communist Government" is changing more towards socalist. They are builind thier own cars and have a huge branch of GM there as well. Ford is manufacturing auto's there soon if not already.
They will grow, and they will change. But I do not think they will be an enemy. They will just want to ensure they have the resources they need to survive.

Re: China next super power?
Well china is growing to rival the US in influence over other nations. This is what really creates a super power not military might. They over the past year have been on a somewhat political blitz in africa, you might not think much of africa but they have resources that china needs. And china can play a role in developing them towards there models. Latin america also is coming somewhat under there sphere, Brazil has an economic model that is somewhat comparible to China, and they deal with Hugo Chavez's goverment. The main thing china needs is oil, and they must attain this at a increaseing rate for there economy to keep on developing. As for china and india going to war, i dout that. There ties are in fact getting better, just yesterday they reopended a trade route tha that had been closed for over 40 years. So there influence and economic power gains. But as for military they are working very hard to modernize there forces and create a more US style military. They even plan on cutting back on there large army, to have a more elite fighting force.

Re: China next super power?
I think China will become a global super power, maybe even the strongest one on earth. I just think it may take a bit longer.
I imagine this will come as a result of the US diminishing some in power. However, as for the US losing power, I don't think it will just burn out (like Rome) but it will just start to be more equal with other countries in terms of power, economy, etc.
China's main source of power would probably be its growing economy and huge population, especially in comparison to countries like the US and Western Europe.
As for not having a navy, that would seem to diminish their chances of becoming the world's next number one country, but maybe they could do that with just money and power alone ? (By this I don't mean through just weapons)

Re: China next super power?
I read a great book about the differences in education and technology of Asia more specifically India and China and it seems that they are advancing more rapidly then the U. S. especially within education. So it is definitely possible.

Re: China next super power?
I've pondered this for sometime. I ran across this article which is a good read on the subject. Worth checking out.
