The Da Vinci Code:Fact or fiction ..what duya think?
i just wanted some opinions in this matter.. and if you havent heard the hype about the movie and everything about it, people are actually starting to believe in the suggestions that the book has brought out... it tells a fictional story about a the deception of man and pretty much goes against all the the chritian churches teaches by saying that Jesus Christ actually had children and that the church was hiding this truth just so it could remain in power.. tell me what you think.. it'd prolly be best if you've watched the movie or read the book..

Re: The Da Vinci Code:Fact or fiction ..what duya think?
Well...the book IS a work a fiction...first hint.
It's a juicy story, so that's sure to help sell it.
And it involves the greatest icon ever.
All factors for a best seller.
(Dig up a copy of "The Passover Plot", by Dr. Hugh J. Schonfield, for an interesting interpretation of the life and death of Jesus.)

Re: The Da Vinci Code:Fact or fiction ..what duya think?
At first when I read it, I thought it posed an interesting and compelling argument. I mean if we were to suppose that Jesus DID marry and have a rugrat (or multiple) then it seems logical that the catholic church would wanna squash the fact hard.
BUT, the more you read about this kind of thing, the more you know it's all totally bogus. Dan Brown took a handful of conspiracy theories and falsified historical ideas, and stitched them into a page turner. The so called "Facts" at the front of the book give it away: they aren't actually facts (at least the first one isn't). They are things that, for the purpose of reading the book, have to be considered as facts, but they aren't true. This book should be treated as nothing more than what it is- a very well written piece of bullshit.
IMHO...lol

I belive it is indeed fiction, but it would be great to see all the religions crumble. The catholic churches have always been a little crazy, but then again what religion hasnt?

we need a movie and book that shows historical basis for Scientology. That would be fun. Maybe have Charlize Theron be the godhead in it. Since scientologists like to hook up to a machien and cleanse their therons.

Re: The Da Vinci Code:Fact or fiction ..what duya think?
I much prefer the hypothesis in "Another Roadside Attraction" by Tom Robbins. In that book, the protagonists actually find Jesus' body (remains). I think they found it in the Vatican somewhere (it's been a while since I read the book). They decided that they didn't likethe notion of disproving the "Christ is Risen" story, so they stuffed him in the basket of a hot air balloon and resurrected him.

Re: The Da Vinci Code:Fact or fiction ..what duya think?
I think that The Da Vinci Code is precisely what we need in this day of age. In a time where millions upon millions press their own beliefs onto others by threatening eternal damnation, this book has become a catalyst to the reexamination of one's own beliefs. I personally found this story to be one of the most thought provoking that I've ever read. I think that religious followers who hail to a church moreso than directly to their God need to read this book to be made aware of the horrible things that have been done in the name of "religion" and "God". Your relationship with God, Yahweh, Lucifer, Buddha, Ghandi, Allah, or whomever you choose should be personal- not directed through a corrupt institution that harnesses people's narrow mindedness in order to carry out it's own agenda. More horrible acts have been carried out in the name of religion than anything else in the world. Organized religion whores off people's beliefs, end of story. Create your own relationship with God, don't depend on someone else.

And, as for kwyk's post, I highly recommend Tom Robbins. He's a brilliantly eclectic author with the most absurd, outlandish stories ever. Makes you wish your life wasn't so damned boring and dull.

Re: The Da Vinci Code:Fact or fiction ..what duya think?
The book has actually done the opposite of what it was supposed to do. Instead of people questioning their faith, they are re-enforcing it. It is a great page turner that used it controversial subject matter to build up the hype to make more sales. Unfortunately, there some people who would rather believe something is fact just because it is written in a book then take the time to research it themselves. Example, for anyone who saw the movie "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", it said it was based on true events. After doing some simple searching, they should have said loosely based.

Re: The Da Vinci Code:Fact or fiction ..what duya think?
first,I do not believe in a God,nor do I believe in the whole creation story.I am an evolutionist.you know where I stand,so yes,Ibelieve that the events of the story could be true.I am more willing to believe that mankind is capable of drumming up this whole concoction, while trying to establish themselves(the church) as the only authoritive figure on the subject and therefore, using irrational fear to control minions of weak-minded individuals into believing that a force that cannot be seen, heard,or proven will offer your soul to Satan if you do not worship they or live by their system.I am a huge fan of alot of the traditional values and moral system that religons bestow on their followers, but to tell me that I'm going to live for all eternity in Hades because I do not believe a Greater Power exist, but yet,I try to live a morally correct life every day of my life is insane.IF IT LOOKS LIKE A CULT AND SOUNDS LIKE A CULT!!!!!

Re: The Da Vinci Code:Fact or fiction ..what duya think?
To answer the questions posed in the book: Who Cares?
The Da Vinci Code hasn't led anyone to question their faith, its just a story. Sure, Jesus not being married at age 32 in that culture is crazy and most likely the truth WAS covered up by the church. Not to stay in power, but to reinforce their choice of the four gospels they wanted. There are literally hundreds of gospels books not included in the bible and alot of the gnostic ones paints Mary Magdalene as the most significant disciple and Christ's lover. Hell, some of the meetings about the bible had transcripts and Revelation was included because they enjoyed the language in it, not because anyone believed it. I'm not saying the hand of God wasn't involved in choosing the Bible, but each book was chosen for very specific reasons.
But I can't stress enough, Christ having children or a wife or brothers or sisters, it really doesn't matter. Either you believe he died for you sins or not. Anyone who gets angry at this novel or mislead by it are equally foolish.

Any book that incorporates historical material in order to add authenticating details to mythology, prose, or didactic texts can only be fiction in its entirety.
Uh, wait...

I think the larger issue in The Da Vinci code is the theory that Jesus was "just a man", not the son of god. If this were true then the basis of christianity as we know it comes into question. If Jesus was a mortal and not the son of god, does him dying on the cross for man's sin actually matter? If it's just a man dying, does it have any effect on the rest of mankind's collective eternal lives? Another question to be raised by the Da Vinci code, is that if Jesus did have decesndents, and he was the son of god, would they also have godly powers?
By the way, has anyone read Angels & Demons, the prequel to the Da Vinci Code? I really think that book would have made a much better movie. That book really makes me think about the dangers of religous fanaticism.
