Volume License Key,
I did not know either so I did a quick search.
Here is a C&P from Billy's site....
Microsoft is committed to the protection of intellectual property rights and to the reduction of software piracy worldwide. Though Microsoft includes product activation technology in some products sold through original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or retail channels, most licenses acquired through one of Microsoft's volume licensing programs are not required to be activated. Volume license customers must input a Volume License Product Key (VLK) or an Online Services Product Key (OSK) when installing from some volume license media.
Volume License media for impacted products will no longer include a preconfigured product ID or a product key on the CD packaging. The appropriate Volume License or Online Services Product Key must be used for desktop or network administrator installs.
Additionally, retail product CDs (for example, boxed product purchased from a retail outlet) can no longer be used for multiple installations. If you currently use CDs from a retail product kit for installations, these processes will affect your installation procedures. Volume License or Microsoft® MSDN® media acquired through Volume License are the only media available for multiple installations. These media will require the use of a Volume License or an Online Services Product Key that will be assigned to your company or institution.
The Volume License or Online Services Product Key is assigned to your company or institution and is intended for your company or institution's sole use. You should take reasonable and appropriate measures to ensure that this product key is used only to install and distribute licenses pursuant to the terms of your agreement.
Please forgive my ignorance but I've never had to deal with these activation keys before. I went to install a program (Pinnacle Studio 9) and the installation screen told me I needed to install SP1 prior to installing Studio. Well of course when trying to install the SP I get an error saying my key is invalid. So in order to correct it with a valid key, do I need to re-install XP, or is there a place to edit the info in the registry or something?
