WOW!! I agree with this about 75%, I think most kids are over diagnosed and parents use it as an excuse not to be parents!! I would say 75% are little brats with Lazy Ass parents!

The government estimates about 1 in 150 children have some form of autism. But many experts believe these unsociable behaviors were just about as common 30 or 40 years ago and that the increase is mostly caused by a surge in special education services and a corresponding shift in diagnoses.

Wendy Fournier of the National Autism Association, a parents' advocacy group, said she was invited to speak Monday on Savage's three-hour program by Savage's boss, Mark Masters of Talk Radio Network, which syndicates the show across the country. A spokeswoman from Talk Radio Network did not immediately return a call for comment.

Fournier called Savage's comments "way, way, way over the line and cruel."

"I'm hoping to make him see the reality of what these kids are facing," she said. "You can't fix it by telling a kid to shut up. It's like telling a kid with cancer to stop being sick."

Evelyn Ain, whose 8-year-old son has been diagnosed with autism, said she had never heard of Savage and couldn't believe what she had heard when she first listened to the remarks. She organized a demonstration Monday outside New York's WOR-AM, which broadcasts Savage.

"That isn't just freedom of speech, it is hateful speech when you say 99 percent of children with autism are brats," she said. "I'll tell you, I wish I had a brat."

Savage, with more than 8 million listeners a week, is talk radio's third most popular personality behind Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, according to Talkers magazine. He's made a living off bold, outrageous statements: His brief MSNBC show was canceled after he told a caller he should "get AIDS and die, you pig."

Peter Bell, executive vice president of national advocacy group Autism Speaks, said he isn't aware of any big controversy about overdiagnosis of autism. He said Savage's remarks, effectively blaming parents, reflect an outdated point of view.

"He's an entertainer, he does these things for attention," Bell said. "I think we should, to the best we can, ignore it."

I just read this story and came here to post about it. You beat me to it.

It is a very uncomfortable topic but one that absolutely needs to be addressed. Though I doubt by debating it on Webrats we will ever solve the problem. That is unless there are a few members of Congress on here who enjoy some of the pictures and occasionally stop by for convo.

Anyhow...if one looks back to the early 90s, any of the 80s, or and decade prior to this one....you won't see any of the mental health issues that our children are "facing" today. There were some cases but those cases were servere and those children had help and usually became a functional member of society.

Today lazy parents are almost entirely to blame. Televisions become babysitters. Game systems become a child's most physical activity. I see children as young as 4 playing some games on a Nintendo DS. Those children can't even read but they can play a Pokemon game. It's crazy.

Autism is a very serious disease however and I think that radio host pushed the limit with what he said.

We all just need to take a step back and realize that everything starts at home. All these cases of ADD and ADHD etc etc never existed when I was a kid. That kid got a paddling in the office for not paying attention and then sent back to class. Their desk got moved near the teachers and next thing you know...they were paying attention.

There are people with these issues. The conditions do exist, but to many people want a diagnosis. Just because you're sad doesn't mean you suffer from depression. My son's school counselor tried to say he had ADHD. No, my son is a kid with energy that wants to play outside. I can agree with this article. I don't think its as high as 99% fakers, but it is a high number. I don't understand why people feel better when a doctor says something is wrong with them.

Yea. 99% is probably a little high. But I definitely think it is highly overdiagnosed. The people that I used to live next to had two sons who were "autistic." Those kids were not autistic, they were simply very energetic and their parents let them do whatever they wanted.

Yeah the condition may well be overdiagnosed, but the DJ in question made himself a pinhead when he said that crap.

There's a carload of difference between kids with autism, a disorder that seriously affects a child's development and possible misdiagnoses of ADD/ADHD. If he'd stuck with those two and left autism out of it he might have had a lot more to stand on.

ADD/ADHD is definitely overdiagnosed, due to doctors too ready to shovel out pills, parents too lazy to actually PARENT their kids, and schools too emasculated by the modern interpretation of the law to properly keep order in their own environment. (Why am I picturing South Park right now? "SIT DOWN AND STUDY!")

Autism is a totally different beast.

Doctors stay in business with repeat visitors and selling medicine. So why can't they just say something to please parents with misbehaved children and give them some pills for it? Its what we adults do, no?

Seriously, western medicine has overmedicated us and us self medicators are even worse.

Oddly enough, I agree completely with what Krasch has posted--just might be the first time this has ever happened. As to kids being overly active and the whole ADD/ADHD nonsense, yeah definitely over-diagnosed as well. Also, kids spending enormous amounts of time consumed with the video games/Ipods/TV/internet and whatever else they may use is just part of society. I grew up and was in my single-digit years in the 80's, and I played a shit-load of video games. I also happened to play a ton of sports almost every day as well. I agree, kids definitely need to get out more and get some exercise, but this is the 21st century, stop living in the 20th. I personally used to run 3 miles a day, and will get back into it very shortly.

Yeah it's definitely not the video games. I was just out of my single digit years when the 80's hit, and played copious amounts of video games, D&D, and listened to rock music. I'm not sociopathic, never committed a crime, never even hung out at the mall. All because I had parents who actually knew what I was up to and gave a crap what I was up to. And I'd have caught hell if I was half as unruly as some of these little cretins.

Of course one should try reasoning with their kids before anything else, but sometimes that just doesn't work and it's just not right when parents/schools et cetera can't do a little burnishing of the little brat's backside when necessary. It's idiocy like that, that has kids thinking it's ok to bring guns to school these days when the worst we'd do is get in a fistfight.

Letting school discipline your kids is no better than letting TV raise them. You dont know what position that principal has on things, and its his influence and decision as to the punishment. Judge and Jury if you will. Its not "OK" to just say, eh I will just smack you around a little, its easier that way. I think its lazy and weak, I was raised getting spanked and slapped with switches, it didn't do anything positive for me but make me madder and do even worse things. Kids will be kids, half of the time they don't know any better. My parents and inlaws are very clear on this stance with my kid, and future ones. Inlaws are the worse. :tongue:

Oh I certainly agree it shouldn't be the first golf club out of the bag, but it seems we'll have to disagree as to whether to put that putter in the bag to begin with.

I will suggest though that if reasoning were all we ever needed to do to change aberrant behavior, our jails would be all but empty. I think you have to clearly set the ground rules, and try to reason with kids if possible, but if all else fails, getting penal with them can work in many cases. It certainly did in generations past. Feel free to disagree though.

One of the first steps to diagnose if a child has autism, doctors determine if the child recodnizes eye-contact. This is hard to make a mistake on....

Then they go to mri's, where it is nearly impossible to misdiagnose.........

The disturbance is not better accounted for by Retts Disorder or childhood disintegrative disorder.

I think that Mr. Savage was just trying to stir up the media when he states that autistic kids are just brats. Yes there are some lazy parents in this world, and their kids are scared for life by that fact. Yes sometimes people claim that their kid has autism even if they are just unruly. However, saying that 99% of all autistic kids are just brats is not accurate.

I have a friend with an autistic little girl and the girl is not that bad of a kid, sometimes she gets a little out of hand, but not unbearable. Her parents are anything but lazy, hard working and always trying to do the best for her that they can. I don't think that any of you have room to talk until you have at least spent a decent amount of time around an autistic child. Walk a mile in the parents shoes of autistic child before you make any judgments.

Mags, I don't think anyone here was disputing that. It seems that, for the most part, everyone here agrees. I don't really have much to say, because I too believe that ADD/ADHD and autism are two totally different issues, ADD/ADHD being WAY over diagnosed, and autism, which is autism. I mean, typically, people show definitive evidence of autism, or they don't.

i was diagnosed with ADHD
ritilin did buggerall
now i just try realy hard at anything i want to accomplish
it worked for me

its all about goals!!!!!!!!!!!!
