It's not just fuel for your car that's at stake. Everything. EVERYTHING. From food production to transportation to manufacturing is dependent on oil. This summer's rising prices has put us in a very bad situation. Can you imagine ourselves in 2 years with double those prices?
If you have a plan, i'd love to hear it. Nationalize the oil companies, perhaps? It will never happen.

Knife analogy doesn't work. Killing us as a country would cripple them as well since they trade their oil in our currency for the most part.
Ok, there are 2 trains of thought here.
1) Allowing off shore drilling helps us immediately and prices go down significantly to allow families to regroup and plan for alternatives.
2) Not allowing off shore drilling is the only leverage we have and plays into the oil companies goals if we give in.
I'm inclined to believe #2 and let me explain why. If we allow off shore drilling and the prices go down, then oil companies get less profits per gallon. So basically, they want us to open up new areas for them so that they can make less money? Not only that but the Department of Defense claims no immediate relief, so politicians are running on platforms of relief, paid for by oil companies, when the relief is decades away. Sure.

I've said before that Obama wasn't my first choice. I liked Kuchinich and Ron Paul the most, so it's not like I'm gung ho about either Obama or McCain. Anyway, the important thing to realize is that the oil companies have a hard-on for lifting the ban, and anytime the ENEMY wants something this bad, it's usually a good idea to deny it to them. Politics however will spin this to the American public in a way that the majority will approve of lifting the ban, and we all get fucked in the long run. God Bless America.
