I would guess the parents had probably lost hope that he would take the "normal" path in the first place.

In two more years they'd show him the door at school anyway but he's lucky he has parents that can pay for a private tutor. He must be white, if he was inner-city black he'd probably be selling drugs and want to stay in school to keep up contact with his customers.

If the gamer noted is about average with an income of about $3,000 a year that's definitely not much of a future. Nut cases that get out of school and can't hold a job get better money collecting SSI. It was $400 a month years ago so it might be closer to $500 a month now.

I doubt if it's a career he'll be able to make money at for the next 50 to 60 years. He needs to make at least $5 to $10 million to eek out a middle class living to live on for that amount of time. With a GED at best he'll be able to get into community college and then he'll most likely need to take remedial reading and math classes before he can take some of the courses he'll need for college credits. Looks like a hard life to come unless there is a lot more money in computer gaming than I perceive. Maybe they'll come up with a burger flipping game for the Wii that he can use to learn a career backup.
