Question about Internet Domains?
So I was thinking today: Who actually owns unclaimed domain names? I realize there are companies like register.com and godaddy who sell domains, but who are they getting them from? Also, how are the different domains figured out, like .gov .org .net .biz .edu?

Re: Question about Internet Domains?
There is a worldwide organisation that determines internet domains, but beyond that, can't remember.

Re: Question about Internet Domains?
I think it is first come first serve on names. You pay Go Daddy to register the domain name - that is a service your paying for. That's why some people made quick money registering various expected site names and offering them for sale. I'm not sure if someone could have registered Pepsi.com, since "Pepsi" is a registered trademark, then hold it hostage - trying to charge Pepsi a boatload of money for the site name. They would probably loose in a court battle, but Pepsi would probably pay them just to make the issue go away.

Re: Question about Internet Domains?
I couldn't find a link for it, but there is an anti "internet squatter law"(had a guestion about it on the GMAT).
Basically it says that you can't buy a domain name for the sole purpose of selling it later.

Re: Question about Internet Domains?
The laws were changed to prevent purchasing names you were not going to use. There had been a rash of things like someone buying mcdonalds.com and then wanting millions from the hamburger people for the name. This is largley a thing of the past. Although I did discover that someone wanted $500 for my last name.com.
There are still some reserved domains. .edu must be a college/university. .gov a goverment agency. .mil US armed forces. The line between .com, .org, .net and all of the newer ones gets blurry in a hurry. There are still occasional court fights over domain names.
Hope this helps.
If you are looking to setup a web site, register.com, et al. will check if a name is taken. If someone is parked on the name you want look at how much they want, how much the court fight will cost and how important the name is to your bussines. If you have been dave's tires since 1973, and want to be davestires.com and the name is being held. The fight will be simple.

Re: Question about Internet Domains?
previous comment correct, the days of getting a website and selling it to someone because it should be theirs anyways is over. The courts are almost always granting the large company the site, they in fact are the company the name that the sites are meant to represent anyway.
