I recently started shaving my pubes..but I get razor burn and it just doesn't look the most appealing. How can I cut down on the razor burn? I know about using shaving cream, but are there any good techniques?

Do it concistantly for a while, hopefully it will just go away thats what happened with me. Also go with the grain, not against. Ive heard putting some shaving cream on after works, but its never really worked for me.

i have been shaving with a safety razor for many years ... i use a good quality shaving cream and give it time to "work" . i normally do not get razor burn , there are times when i get a little irritation ... i attribute this to trying to squeeze one more shave out of a blade than i should have . most of the time i do not have to use lotions afterwards ... i am fortunate in that department . there are a lot of lotions out there that would seemingly work ... sadly though , most have alcohol in them or turn "gummy" . |

Aloe vera straight from the plant probably works best. If not that, try to find something with that in it.

I've been doing it consistantly for a while now and I got irritation at first, but after a while it just went away. Also you might try shaving with a more expensive razor. I believe if it has more blades it helps reduce the irritation. You might try using a womens Venus.

The sharper the blade, the better. This is very important. The longer the hair, the quicker the blade will dull. Dull blades tend to irritate the skin and your skin down there is very sensitive. I used to get razor burn after using a blade for more than a few times or waiting too long between shaves. The razor that gives me the best shave is the Gillette Fusion. With the 5 blades, there is little to no irritation and it makes for a very comfortable shave. If there is irritation and it itches, do your best NOT to scratch. That will only irritate it further. Just think of it as poison ivy and leave it be. As CD has suggested, use aloe vera directly from the plant. Aloe plants grow fast and multiply quickly, so you'll likely only ever need to buy one. They're also very good for soothing sunburns. Good luck!

If you don't need to be to-the-skin-bald, simply use a battery operated razor/trimmer. Gives you a nice close cut, with absolutely no burn. If you need to be bald bald then you must do the following: Get a four- or five-bladed razor. Personally, I use the Quattro for women. It's a four-blader and works wonders. There is a five-blader out as well. The more blades, the easier the cut, the less the burn. Use a quality shave cream. Not the $.79 Colgate. Use the Neutrogena For Men shave cream in the picture. It works much better and is worth the cost. Trust me. Afterwards, rinse and then apply the Neutrogena Post Shave Lotion pictured. Apply it often, up to three times a day, especially if you sweat. Keep the site clean and keep that lotion on there!!! I cannot stress that enough. You get burn because the microscopic cuts get infected. Keep it clean and moisturized and you'll be golden. PS, those two Neutrogena products are completely okay to use on the genitals. I've been doing it for over a year w/o no problems.

It's the same for me, I shave and get razor burn if I haven't done it in a while. If you do it on a regular basis though, like every day or ever 2nd day when you take a shower, the razor bumps will go away because your skin will be used to it. The aloe-vera creme suggestion should work too since it helps soothe the skin. Anything with alcohol in it should be avoided.

| Re: Shaving
advice from a friend (as most guys don't shave pubes...) is take a really long hot bath - it softens the hairs and makes them cut clean rather than "tug and snap" - she prefers to use a base shaving oil first (Clinique or Neutrogena for men, again). Work in the oil and let it rest for a while. Then work in the shaving cream and warm and wet the blade first. Always use fresh blades - any man with a beard will tell you that removing a face full of coarse hair kills a new blade and it is never as good again. Girls may use a blade for weeks on their legs, but on "sensitive areas" it is asking for rash and pain. Never towel dry afterwards - it leads to rash and spreads infections as well as being a sure route to more pain. Just tamp down with fresh towel or let air drying take the job for you. Go with the lotions afterwards - in extreme cases go with what pro-cyclists know: use gentle antiseptic lotions the first time after shaving.
