Hard Drive crashed.

I need help. I have a hard drive that I took out of my old computer when I purchased my new one. So the old one i put into a case and use it as an external hard drive.

So the other day it just shot shit and so now I supposse I lost everything on it which is really bad. When its on my computer no longer sees it. It makes a high pitched buzzing noise but its not real loud. And if I put my ear up to the casing I can hear a clicking noise.

Is there anything I can do to get it started back up long enough to get my files off of it?

Re: Hard Drive crashed.

Try pulling it out of the external case and plugging it into the PC internally (is the connection to the case USB?). See if you are able to get the hard drive recognized that way. Make it a slave to your internal main drive. There should be a description/picture on the drive that describes the jumper settings.

If you can't get it recognized as a slave to the main drive, try making it the primary drive on your second IDE connector, where your CD ROM probably is.

Also, I know it sounds funny, but don't be afraid to whack it against something to help get it to spin up. Only do this when it's NOT plugged in.

Re: Hard Drive crashed.

heh heh heh ... whack it ! i wonder if "tapping" would be a better choice of words . sometimes it works ...

you could try sticking it in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes (seriously) , hook it up and try it .

Well, If your very, very careful you can remove the screws on the cover. If the pickup arm is constantly going crazy your probably screwed!!! Also, how did you mount it...vertically or horizontally. Some HDD want work mounted vertically!

You rock!! Thank you!! This freaking worked! Your a life saver man.

I don't know what the hell happened but hooking it up to the computer worked. Its an older HD so i had to actually go out and buy a old ribbon cable, and did the jumper settings and hooked it up to my computer. Luckly my new computer still had a hidden ribbon cable connection!

Thank you again! I don't know why it just stopped working it was connected using a Firewire connection and i'm running VISTA. I'm assuming either the connections went bad or VISTA stopped recognizing the driver.

Re: Hard Drive crashed.

w00t!!

Glad to be of help. I fix computers all day long for a living.

So many times a problem like that is related to the external-ness of the drive. It could have been any number of things, the driver, the case, the cable, firewire connector on the motherboard, etc.

But who cares now, you got it working.
