Essential Do/Don'ts for Windows
Do: You *must* close ALL programs, including unnecessary tasks in Task Manager and with reference to the registry startup tips in the Troubleshooting section of this help file (and the latest version on our Web site). Press CTRL-ALT-DEL once and go to Task Manager. Our test machine shows this as a minimum task list. Anything showing on your PC not on this list, should probably be terminated:

Do: Physically disconnect the PC from a network if there is any chance of incoming file or service requests from the network. These will interfere with the program's processing of your disks.
Do: Boot the PC fresh before using Evidence Eliminator™
Do: Disable all screensavers, powersaving devices and anything else that may cause reads/writes to the disk.
Don't: You must not do *anything* on the PC while it is being cleaned. Don't open files, don't press keys, don't click the mouse.
Don't: Under any circumstances change, rename, create new, or delete Folders while the program is running, nor run any other program which does this. It is likely to cause disk corruption.
These requirements are essential to clean a Windows NT installation to the lowest level possible. Failure to complete them will result in repeated restarts as the program fights with others for disk access, and possibly result in disk corruption and data loss.
File System differences in Windows NT
If you are familiar with Evidence Eliminator™ in Windows 95/98 you'll know the program locks up with an error message when any other program writes to the disk. In Windows 95/98 this prevents disk corruption when any other program writes over files that Evidence Eliminator™ is already working on.
In Windows NT this protection isn't possible. Windows NT operating system occasionally writes to log files, event files and the paging file. In Windows NT, Evidence Eliminator™ only "locks" the files and parent folders of those files it's working on.
Another program may read/write to the disk in another location and no warning will appear at first.
This is no license to run other programs at the same time as Evidence Eliminator™ . If you do, you eventually will corrupt your disk. This file system difference puts more responsibility on you as the administrator of your system to make certain no un-necessary programs are running or writing to disk. While Evidence Eliminator™ is capable of cleaning the system between routine system log writes, it will eventually end in disaster if you run other programs at the same time.
Please don't run other programs at the same time as Evidence Eliminator™ !! It will eventually result in a hard disk crash and you will lose your data!
If you need to do other work while Evidence Eliminator™ is running, the safe procedure is:
a) Press "Stop Work" in Evidence Eliminator™
b) Wait for Evidence Eliminator™ to stop processing.
c) Carry on working until you have finished your work.
d) Once you stop working, then you are ready to start cleaning your disks again.
e) Press the "Windows NT mode" on Evidence Eliminator™ and cleaning will resume.
