NBA Smack Talk thread

Edit May 27. Seems the smack is back, so the NBA threads were split. One serious, one anything goes. this one is anything goes.

My first post predicts 64-18 would be best record.

Cleveland is 63-15
Los Angeles is 63-16
Boston is 59-19.

I made this call a long time ago, figuring 64-18 would be good enough for the Lakers to finish ahead of the Celtics. That's now clinched for LA, we have the tiebreakers since we beat them twice. I never really factored Cleveland into the equation, now we are chasing them.

No worries, we can beat either the Cavs or Celtics on their court. We want Boston, we owe them a spanking. I hope they make it, but I wonder once again if they will duck us as they did so many times in the past by losing in the ECF in seasons the Lakers won it all:

1972
1980
1982
1988
2002
2009?

In the first 4 seasons listed above, Boston had HCA in each conference final, and best record in the NBA. Their 9-2 edge over us in finals is very misleading, we should have beaten them 5 more times since Russell retired. They only play us when they are better, the chicken shits.

However, 9-2 is a garbage statistic and "Cherry picked" by Boston fans and misleading as to who the better franchise is. I checked out the history over 60 years, who came out ahead based on how far they went each season. (furthest into the playoffs determines). Result?

Lakers 33, Celtics 22, "even" 5.

Tiebreak the 5 "even" years by regular season record and it's Lakers 36, Celtics 24. Buck Foston.

Oh, MrEfrisk, Denver beat the Lakers in February. We won season series 3-1.

I have to agree. I have said it before, as long as Kobe plays like Kobe, the Lakers will be a threat. The core of Kobe, Gasol, and Bynum will remain, the rest of the guys will come and go. Replacements will be found when the league adjusts to us.

By the way, it's interesting reading the internet banter on what's going to happen. Everyone is being crowned, everyone is being written off. Examples:

Cavs will win because Stern is now going to promote the new MVP LeBron.
Lakers will win because Stern is afraid Kobe will opt out and bail for Europe.
Celtics will win because they are are better than last year. The new players have adjusted.
Cavs will win because they have HCA
Lakers will win because they are the deepest team in the league.
Cavs will win because they are the deepest team in the league.
Celtics will win because they are the deepest team in the league.
Cavs won't win because Stern wants LeBron to head for the Knicks in 2010.
Lakers won't win because they are soft and can't play defense.
The Celtics won''t win because they are worse than last year, their bench sucks.
Cavs won't win because they only have one legitimate superstar.
Lakers won't win because their bench sucks
Celtics won't win because they haven't repeated as champs in 40 years.

More:

Lakers won't make finals, they will be upset just as the Mavs were in 2007.
San Antonio won't win because they are injured and don't play defense.
San Antonio will win because it's an odd year (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, of course 2001 blows this theory out of the water).
Utah will beat up the Lakers physically, steal one in LA, and defend Home court.
Portland will beat the Lakers just as Utah should have.
Detroit will upset Cleveland. Bad blood between these two teams.
Boston won't even get to the conference finals.

I could go on and on....someone else offer up something before the issues are settled on the court.

Nuggets will win, because the Lakers got upset, and we had an easier road to the championship, and Lebron got hurt in Game 7 of the ECF.

I win Powerball and don't care

(hey, If I am dreamin, I gotta dream big!)

Lakers will win, because of Kobe

You are a realist. I thnk the Duncan era with the Spurs as elite is over. Ginobili will never again be what he was. Spurs missed a chance to trade him in 2007 when he still had worth. Lakers of the 80's shed players like Nixon and Wilkes when they were headed down. Unpopular, yes, but necessary to stay on top. As I said before the league had adjusted to the big 3, just as they had to Shaq and Kobe. Look how fast the league adjusted to the soon to be one-and-done Celtics!

Re: NBA thread 2008/09

It's getting chippy out there!

Let's see, a few days ago Celtics' Rajon Rondo throws the Bulls player Hinrich to the scorer's table, no suspension. So this is ok to do by anyone, right? Some say it's because he plays for Boston, thus no suspension.

So what's going to happen here from these games?:

Tonight, Orlando's Rafer Alston bitch slaps Boston's Eddie House on the back of the head after getting an elbow from him. (Also getting torched, lol).

Lakers' Derek Fisher throws an elbow into Luis Scola's pick, looking first and knowing he is there. (flagrant 2 foul, and ejection). TNT said it may have been retaliation for Scola elbowing Odom the play before. They fueled the fire.

No matter whether they suspend these guys or not, people won't be happy. I suppose if Alston is booted, and Fisher isn't, the conspiracy theorists will have a field day....You know, Lakers and Celtics get all the breaks...

Oh well, it's the playoffs!

Re: NBA thread 2008/09

So Rondo can throw a guy to the scorer's table, grab a guy at the mouth when he's trying to score, and not be suspended. These were early infractions, and it helps he plays in Boston.

However, Fisher, and Alston get it for their antics listed above. If they spared Fisher, people wolud be saying favoritism to the Lakers.

Now, Kendrick Perkins, the Celtics' center throws an elbow intentionally into a guy's throat on Friday. Will he get suspended? Probably not. He's a Celtic. Let's see what heppens next....

Anyway, enjoy this little video, the graphics are great:

Re: NBA thread 2008/09

thanks for the pictures jrh!

A lot of Lakers hate is all over the net. Tells me we are back at the top again. Really, the Houston series wasn't all that bad a deal for us. So, bring on the Nuggets!

Meanwhile, remember this guy? Wonder if he will be back now that the Celtics are headed for oblivion again?

We were dueling in the last NBA thread and took our argument elsewhere, and to a larger stage. I kicked his butt pretty hard and pretty much proved the Lakers are a more successful franchise than Boston. Over the entire history of the NBA, the Lakers have finished better than the Celtics by a huge margin, 37-24. That's domination. rexhamer was touting Celtics final edge of 9-2 over LA, but I proved that means nothing in the big picture, and that his argument was flawed everywhere. Yep, I never lose an internet argument. He tried and met the expected fate.

You just couldn't leave it alone, could you? Your hypocrisy knows no bounds. After having your hat handed to you with a number of replies from me, you sheepishly offered to close the old thread as things "were getting out of hand". I agreed. Then on 3/2 you start this new thread with:

A fresh start, huh? And then on 4/10, completely unsolicited, we get:

The harsh reality is that is has been YOUR argument that has been completely refuted. Logic and facts will do that to a spurious argument all the time. Since my original blog took apart your original argument, is clear from the overwhelming no. of replies in support of the Celtics who has made the better case. And these would not be "misleading stats", they are facts.

Even your fellow Lakers fans have abandoned you. Despite two separate and desperate pleas on the Lakers fans pages for them to show support for your argument, the responded with ZERO replies!

The only way to resolve this here is for you to provide the Webrats community with a link so they can judge for themselves. Fine with me.

Besides - nobody else cares anyways. You just cannot stomach the thought that you were bested in an Internet argument, so you keep trying to find an audience that might be taken in by speculation, misinformation and faulty logic.

First off, we didn't even hear from you for over 2 months. Here's this guy's last log on info:

Second, most people you request a read receipt for don't even open the message you sent, here's from my PM list:

You have 29 confirmed and 275 unconfirmed private message receipts.

Requesting a read receipt is no longer an option since the vBulletin upgrade. Repeating what I said earlier, multiple accounts from the same computer or IP address are detected automatically. We know who ever has more than one account. Again, it would make no sense for me to do it here where no one cares, but at the other site where there are actually Celtics fans.

Also, you had been warned about harrassing the mods already, so I am giving you an official warning.
