A new low... Protesting a Soldier's Funeral

Makes me sick in every way.

There is an Organization - Patriot Guard Riders - that recruits Motorcycle riders to "Escort" the prosession. www.patriotgueard.org
Basically, when there is a fallen Armed forces member, a notice is sent out to the regional club for the pickup and the funeral.
The Bikers ride to the area and park in between the protesters and the prosession or the Ceremony.

They did this for a friend of mine who died back in May. His brother had gotten in contact with them because we had heard that the Phelps were gonna be in town doing their thing. I started talking to the Arkansas Ride Captain, and the way he was telling me, there was only gonna be like 60 riders there for his funeral. But the day of the funeral, there were over 300. That single act made me want to go out and buy a motorcycle so I could ride with these guys, and it gave me a whole new respect for bikers. I already had a lot of respect, because those are the hard workers of America, but that just set it right for me.

two part post

1) Okay, I feel really bad saying this but I think someone has to. Those soldiers died defending the rights of those people to protest and while we might not like it, hell we might really hate it, this is the country we live in. So, I might not agree with what they're saying, but I'd still fight to the death to defend their right to say it.

2) I just attended a few lectures and seminars on the topic and the best term for this group is religious fundementalists. Check out SCOTT APPLEBY and his presentaion "Strong Religion: The Fundamentalist Reaction to the Modernist Malaise" it describes the current trends in radical religious groups and the cultural back lash against it.


And just to make it clear these protester's make me sick to my stomach even thinking about what they're doing, but thinking about the government stepping in and not allowing them to scares me even more.

makes you wonder if any god is real, when you see them on one side saying "god hates america", and others saying, "god gets me through the day", what a mixed up world we live in.....

it does come down to freewill and freedom of speech, like what was said before, sadly if someone wants to preach their religion door to door or whatever its a right they have.

its a shame about humans, and their right to freedom, something needs to be done about those that abuse it....

OK, I am a little confused here.

I have no problem with people protesting the wars and what ever else they have to disagree with in our great country.
Yet I feel it is MORALLY wrong to protest a funeral. The whole idea is to get more attention, and to demonize the family that lost a member. Wheter the parents/Wife/Sister/Brother/Children agree with that Soldier (sailor/Airman/Marine) being where they where or doing what they are doing.

Protest the GOVERNMENT!!! Not the Family!
