Re: Affirmative Action

Diversity is a wonderfull thing in any situation. It brings in knowledge and life experances from all over the world and all walks of life, But that diversty should not be legislated by our government. Every one should be held to the same standard to be part of what they are applying for.

Shure race and sex discrimination still occur today, but i feel it is mosty from the elderly or the under educated in our society. In my workings with young people here in Washington, I find that this new generation of students are much more tolarant of others and are focuse less on what people are and more on who they are.

Maybe a good question would be,
Is affirmative action causin more racial tension than it is solving?
Keep in mind the people that did make the grades but were turned down for a less qualified applicant because of there race or sex.

It is true that you should be able to hire whom ever or what ever you want. But if you plan on making a sucessfull company that will be marketed to a large group of people, wouldent it be better to have that large diversity so that you might be able to reach out to all market places? I would think that if a company only hired whites, or blacks, or even only fat bald dudes that they would not be getting the business from those other minorities.

Re: Affirmative Action

I think there should be no affrimative action in place for any type of situation. I firmly belive in Darwin's theory of "sruvival of the fittest" and I think that putting below average kids into a university instead of a honor roll kids just becuase they are a minority is totally wrong.

If the kids were under par in highschool, chances are they arent going to even make it in a university, so why put them there in the first place. Let the people who dont have the grades to get into a university to a community college and get pre-education stuff out of the way then come back and try to go into the university.

Affrimative action = big no.

Re: Affirmative Action

Does anyone think that children in poorer areas get the same quality of education as those children who live in richer areas?

If not, then shouldn't something be done about it?

Also, is the testing system ever fair (ex. SAT prep courses for those who can afford it)?

Re: Affirmative Action

I think that children in poore areas have the opertunity to get the same education, they just have to work harder for it. however I see it used as an excuse not to. Short of cutting the paychecks of politicians and giving it to schools and teachers I dont think that much will be done. Unfortunatly education dosent seem to be the priority in our society, shure everbody says we need it but very few are willing to sacrifice for it. Especially those in public office. It is sad to see the squandering of our tax dollars on stupid crap when our teachers are almost in a minimum wage job and our schools have leaks in the roof. Even more unfortunate is that schools in lower income areas are usualy the hardest affected by poor funding. That in turn makes it more difficult for those good students to get an equal education. Now this is not to say that rich kids get a better education; as many are simply pushed trough the system as well. The only difference is that they have no excuse. They are not as affected by funding cuts and over crowding of classes since they live in a area that has more tax revinue to fund their school.

I dont know if the testing systems are fair. There are certianly a number of schools that simply teach to the test just to maintain their government cash allotment. Are colleges still looking at GPA's? I have been under the impression that SAT test are primarily used to see if the school is doing its job so the state can justify their spending. You would think that schools that dont do as well would recive higher funding to bring them up to par, but that is not usualy the case. The higher the schools score the more money they get which leads to the further poor funding in low income areas. Maybe I am wrong. That's just what I thought.

Thats true, my friend bought himself a 1550 on the SATs, way up from his first try, with Princeton Review.
Then again, I didn't have the money for the Princeton Review, but I still managed a pretty decent score
