Is there a way a guy could figure out his post counts....example MMMDLXXXIII ?

yeah hover over the number and it will tell you in english

C is 100, C for Century, thus C-Note
L is 50
X is 10
V is 5
I is 1

If a smaller "number" appears before a larger number, subtract it.

ie

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 ,9, 10
Is I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X
Not I, II, III, IIII, V, VI, VII, VIII, VIIII, X

You should be able to figure out what the bar over some letters means. If you can't, I have over 40K posts.

I learned Roman Numerals as a kid. TV shows and movies always list the year made in Roman Numerals in the ending credits.

MCMLXXXVI is 1986. (1000 + 1000-100 + 50 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1)

As a general rule of when to have a lower "number" before a larger number, the digits 4 and 9 call for this rule to keep from repeating a "number" four times in a row. Apparently, the rule doesn't apply to 40K though.

Its funny that I see this today. Only yesterday I was in Borders and while children/ wifey submerged themselves in some or the other book, I found myself reading a children's book called Number Devil and the author used this very 1986-in-Roman example to show how important Zero is. He said that Romans tied themselves in knots with such complicated way to write numbers as they didn't have Zero. Of course, Indians invented the Zero much later....it was the last number...funny when you think of it today...one would have that Zero would have been first

DD, I'm so glad to see you point out the origin for the number "zero". All to often, I see this numeric invention falsely attributed to the Arabs. Thank you for pointing this unique fact out!
