Found the source of the video Rough Seas. USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) was underway for CQ (Airwing Carrier Qualifications) in the Sea of Japan during the week of 22 March 2008. The chopper seen on the ship's bow is a Sikorsky SH-60F from HS-14 squadron, based at the U.S. Naval Air Facility in Atsugi, Japan. The pilot had just landed on deck, and his helo was tied down on Spot 2 because the seas were too rough to move it to a safer place. Fortunately, it only suffered some minor damage (blade crutch support socket) and a lot of salt water intrusion from the sea. While viewing the video please remember that the carrier's flight deck is some 60' (18.3 meters) above the ship's normal water line. Format: Windows Media (.WMV). Silent. Duration: 50" Size: 640 x 480 Note to Joerockhead The first photo I've come across on the internet that was taken during during my West Pac Cruise 70-71. The Beacon was headed to Vietnam and crossed the Pacific with us(Nov. 1970) USS Beacon (PG-99) alongside Kitty Hawk (CVA-63). US Navy photo from the December 1970 edition of "All Hands" Magazine.

wow for some reason i didnt think a ship that size would be that affected by the weather that much. guess it goes to show the power that mother nature really has and that nothing we do will ever be able to completely withstand it.

You need Victory At Sea background music for the most evocative effect

Wow, I am more surprised that the "Shitty Kitty" is STILL in commission! She is one OLD ass Carrier. The Water you see (from the Sea) going over the bow of the Kitty Hawk is called a "White Water" splash, because it is white, and that is from the force of the ship driving into the waves. There is also a "Blue Water", and that is when the bow of the ship goes UNDER the wave. When a Carrier the size of the Kitty Hawk is tossed like that, the seas are rough. And then there are Several Cruisers and Destroyers in the aera going through the same storm. And it is rough. The Indian Ocean provides some of the roughest storms, with 30 Foot Swells. The Storm in the Video looks like those are 20 foot swells, and crashing over the bow. The neat this is, you do get to see the storms like that, and see how much power mother nature has. Then ride though the Seven Seas and the Philippine Islands, and the when the weather is clear, and the surf is only 1 foot, the water is like glass, it is just as beautiful.
