A project I have to do for my computer science class is to benchmark
and compare two different computer systems using at least three
different modes of the Java Virtual Machine. I have thought about
comparing Apples with PCs, however there is the problem of a completly
different set of compilers, hardware and code for the JVMs between them. Does anyone know of any way to compensate for the differences? Any clues, ideas, suggestions or rants about how dumb this project is are all welcome...

Wouldn't the difference of the system be the entire POINT of doing comparitive benchmarks?

well, I already decided to jsut stick with comparing two different PCs. But the difference is, Im talking about benchmarking here so I'll be running some programs to see either how long it takes to do something or how many times it can do something in x amount of seconds for example. Differences in program DO make a difference

try www. hothardware.com for some inspiration. All they do is benchmark different hardware and software for complete systems and sometimes just components. It's a good read if you don't get anything anyway.
