View Full Version : How I F#$@ked with the spammer

A few months ago, a spammer started spoofing my email address to send out their online pharmacy solicitations. It got to be quite annoying as it would fill up my inbox with auto replies, undeliverables, verification requests, etc. I set up rules to send what I could straight to my deleted items, but still about 100 things a day would get end up in my inbox.
I was getting pretty annoyed, so I tried to find more info on the company, doing a whois on their domain. The registry inormation was obviously false, fake address, hotmail email for contact, fake phone number. I then noticed that their domain was chaning pretty much daily, but always the same website. It was also always the same fake registration info. Through the name servers I found the domains were being registered by a Korean ISP that obviously catered to this type of setup (they gave big price breaks for registering 1000+ domains). The website always had a copyright to a corporation, but I couldn't find any info on the corporation.
I was pretty much stuck on trying to find the bastards dong this to me, so I thought I'd at least have some fun. I went to the website one day and placed the biggest order I could. For name, address, etc I used the fake info from their domain registations. For a credit number I took 4 different Visas and used the 1st four digits from 1 card, 2nd four from another, etc (figured this would get through the check as a valid number, but would eventually not get processed by Visa). I used my real email address (they were already spoofing it, so what the hell).
As expected, I eventually got an email response saying my order couldn't be processed. I replied back asking for a phone number so I could call and make sure they had the right CC info, but no such luck. A few days later, I got a second notice saying they couldn't process the order. From there, the correspondence went like this:
Once again, the order did not process because I gave you a fake credit card number. For several months the company you represent has been spoofing my email address to send out spam. This has caused me to receive several hundred undeliverable and auto reply responses each day, wasting too much of my time dealing with it. As soon as you stop spoofing my email address, I'll stop sending fake orders. You stop wasting my time, I'll stop wasting yours.
Just the way you have placed these fraudent orders, we have reported your IP and other details to internet fraud.
Tough talk from the people illegally spoofing my email address.
Not to mention the falsified registration information in your ever changing list of domains?
Please feel free to have the "internet fraud" people contact me directly so we can resolve our differences.
At that point, and knowing I had a real email address that was being monitored by an actual person (enven if it was a gmail address), I changed my rules so that before sending all the crap email to my deleted items, it would also forward a copy to my new friend.
It's now been a bit over a week, and the "internet fraud" people have yet to call, but on the upside, the spam has stopped. Guess the online pharmacy didn't like having their inbox filled with all those bouncebacks etc...

Agreed.
I give you REP for this one.
I've yet to find a way to stop the fake rolex, pharmacy, and viagra ads that come into my regular email account. They all come from the same company, I have yet to find a way to stop it. I think you just hit the nail on the head!

Good story, nice job. Speaking of fake rolexes I have a friend that actually bought one. It looks like the real thing and the only way you can tell it's a fake is by checking the back, and the fact that it doesn't feel as weighty. Anyway, he bought it from some company centered in bangkok china. They actually sent it but a few months later they started using his credit card so he had to cancel it. Still has the watch though, and it actually runs.

Does the second hand sweep or click? Obvious give away right there.

Actually, it has an automatic movement, they did a good job with it. My friend has a serious watch fetish (as do I to a lesser extent) he's taken me to jewelery stores to pretend we're rich and try on Breitlings and things like that. He can't afford a rolex, but he actually has two Tag Heuers which are legit and ran him about 800 a pop. I like my Seikos, very nice styling (in my opinion) and you get a quality timepiece for a pretty good price.

You can get a rolley for tag prices. Just shop around. I didn't ask if they are auto winding, I asked if the second hand sweeps (moves smoothly through the seconds) or if it ticks (stops on every second mark before going to the next one) that's the biggest give away when looking for authentic rolleys.

Automatics all sweep (as far as I know). Anyway, his sweeps. I haven't seen any new submariners (his fave kind) for 800, at least not real ones.

high quality knock off then...what'd he pay for it?
Here in the jewelry district by work, if you pay cash, they hook u up right. Basically the chinks don't report the sale and pocket the cash :) When they do inventory, it turns out stolen...:) There's tons of ways to get good crap at fair prices.

I think he payed above 100 for it, but like I say, it actually looks nice (and keeps good time to boot). More than I'd pay for any kind of fake, but he's taken it into jewelery stores and fooled the clerks (as long as he doesn't let them hold it and see the back) and they let him mess with the really pricey stuff. I suppose when you deal with stolen merchandise you can get stuff at good prices, I was more referring to legit purchases. :lolhit:

not true. If it's self winding, then it clicks. If it has a battery it sweeps. I used to think the same as you, but learned different when I was at Ben Bridge picking out my Tag.

All rolleys I've seen sweep regardless of whether it was self or battery :dunno:
All Tags I've seen don't sweep regardless of wheter it was battery or self
But I've been wrong before, so meh.

Though I got it backwards, Rolex with battery clicks, self winding sweeps.

I think our next mission is to pose as trust fund kids and go to test drive our fantasy cars. If we enter the watch market again I'll give you a holla. You lost a Tag? That sucks, what happened?

On the move from Vegas to LA earlier this year...I usually just wear a swiss army watch and only the Tag when I was out peemping. I had a box with my valuables in the truck and when I made a stop to piss it fell over. I was sure I grabbed everything back and was in a hurry since I left to mexico as soon as I got to LA....I'm sure someone in Barstow is one lucky SOB. :hs:
