Any body have some suggested companies/models of pocketknives, especially switchblades or "assisted opening"?

I've always liked Gerber knives. Here's a link to the knife that I almost cut my finger off with. I had it for like a week before I fucked myself up with it. It's a real good knife though, just the one I had was cursed. It opens very easily with just a flick of your thumb too. No thumb stud needed.

You can also check out Gerber's F.A.S.T. Draw system too.

Oh yeah, might as well add what I'm currently packing...

For everday carry (have it in my pocket right now, actually):Aluminum scales, half serrated Leek (http://www.knivesplus.com/kershaw-leek-knives.html)
For when I feel like being a badass: All black, half serrated drop point Blur (http://www.knivesplus.com/Kershaw-blur.html)

5" != CA switchblade legal, so that answers that question.

Spyderwrench by Spyderco, it's a demon multi-tool, that and a leatherman. Not sure we are talking about similar usage though.
There isn't a week goes by without one of them comming to the rescue, from camping, cars, boats etc. etc.
The Leatherman has an advantage when it comes to single handed operation, but apart from that my preference is with the spyderwrench.

Never said it was a switch blade. ANY switch blade is not legal in CA.

I think that you are allowed to carry an "assisted opening" knife = switchblade as long as the blade is under 1.9 inches in California.

Two things... I thought that the requirement when it comes to CA is that it has to be 3" or less blade for it to be a switchblade.

Second: "assisted opening" is NOT a switchblade. I have two AO knives, and they're both 50-States legal (except for length on one of them... :dunno: ). Assisted oepning, you start the blade going using either a rear flipper or the standard thumb stud, and it will continue the motion for you, to completion.
The big difference is that a switchblade has a release mechanism (like a button, or I've even seen ones where you torqued the scales), whereas an AO just continues a standard action.

I misspoke. I meant 5 fingers (3").

Rule of thumb here in So Cal...if you are a minority, don't carry anything that is questionably legal; ie switchblades. So I carry that S&W.

I know that assisted opening knives are not technically switchblades, but a cop might give you trouble if they don't know much about assisted opening knives. How much were you planning on spending for the knife?

Or they might just give you trouble if they feel like giving you trouble (as per Juan's comment). Generally... I figure if a cop is checking me, I'm already fucked, because i'm a firm believer in 4th Amendment rights (Juan, don't start a political flamewar).

As for price... I generally try to spend less than $100 per knife, as they tend to add up quickly.

Buck, sog, gerber and kershaw all have assisted opening knives for under $100. I have a sog assisted opening knife which works well. If I were you I would just go down to a local knife store and see what knife fits the best. You might also want to check out the buck knife website and click on info center, then knife know how. They have pretty good section on picking a knife which might help you in making a decision.

I have the oddest complaint about the Sog AO knife... it's too light! I tried it out in a store, and the lack of weight, density, and apparent solidness was misgiving-causing.

This isn't the forum for that, so why even start trouble. ;) You know my stance, follow the law, and you will be okay. Break it, and well...you know.

A lot of the knives out there use light weight materials. What length do you want?

Lucky Bob
07-08-2005, 09:18 PM
Might as well keep it roughly concealed-carry legal... 3" blade.

I also have a couple larger knives, but I'd rather have a small, very sharp knife than just a big knife.

Can't Edit anymore, so here's an addendum: Seems that NYC concealed carry law is <4", so that's the guideline I'll use.

These knives might work:
-Buck knife: Tempest or Sirus
-Kershaw knife: Blur or Blackout

Thanks for the advice, but you really should read the entire thread.

I said that I had a Kershaw Blur in the third post.

Personally, I was quite fond of my kershaw leek with a grey handle airbrushed with red. It was an aluminum handle so that should cover the light requirement and great one handed opener. I miss it, that's where I should warn you: the clip on the back may become bent and once that happens you're much more likely to lose it. (That's what happen to me). But I got a good 6 months service from it and plan to buy another when I get some spare cash and keep it in a side pocket rather than the back so it doesn't go MIA again.

Silly Question time, What are you using the knives for ?

Honest answers only please, complete with frequency.

If you're thinking about for fighting, no way in hell.
I'm much better trained with my fists than I am with a knife, and the last thing I want is it getting used against me. Therefore, when I carry it with me, it stays in my pocket in the event of a fight.

I mostly just use it as a utility knife, and as a machismo thing amongst friends.

As Far As An Every Day Carry I Switch Between A Spyderco Harpy ( Great Cutting Power And Very Mean Looking) And A Cold Steel Recon Spear Point Blade ( A Little Large For Your Needs But In Over 3 Years Of Carry And Hard Use It Has Never Failed). You Already Have The Ken Onion Style Assisted Openers, So I Would Recomend Any Of The Axis Locks From Bench Made Or If You Dont Mind The Slightly Extra Legal Size The Recon Is Unbeateable.

Regardless of it's intended use, style, or size, in my estimation you can't beat a "Case xx" knife. Built to last, holds an edge, and chances are it will only increase in value...

Actually, I had a case sheath-knife, and in my experience, it wasn't as great as everybody said it was. :dunno:

Pocketknives I carry range from a cold steel magnum tanto folder to my swisstool.

Typical use, picking nails, cutting stuff. Secondary use is fighting if I don't have my pistol on me. I practice relatively often thanks to work.

I got stopped and searched on a cross country trip from Texas to Wisc. The first thing this corn-fed Iowa trooper asked me was" Where's the dope Tex?". Being a world class smart ass I replied, "The only dope I know about is the dope asking for the dope!"VERY WRONG thing to say to a 6' 7" or so geneticly inferiour peace officer. He found my German made Hubertus auto opener and could not figure out how it opened. I wasn't going to show him and got it back. It has to be one of the finest made knives I have ever bought. $175.00 seemed like alot then but I would not take anything for it. If you can one GET IT, you will be happy with it.

They're listed by model names, not numbers: https://www.bokerusa.com/default2.asp

Any clue what the model name is?

hirollcenter

The 492 is the number on the blade its a two blade Barlow type knife very sturdy, still tight after all this years..If you look in the knife bible the numbers give you the type of knife the handle type and amount of blades...

Lucky Bob

Oh, it's a multiblade... personal preference, but I've never liked multiblades, or even Swiss Army knives, for that matter. Either gimme a Gerber or Leatherman multitool, where the knife is merely one of the many tools, or a sharp, single-handed-opening single-blade knife.

if i had to recomend a folding knife, i'd have to go with the benchmade 710
as far as ive heard, the m2 steel is sweet, but i cant confirm that its that much better than the other shit. with the m2 steel the coating on the blade may not be as durable, but again im not sure about that.
the blade length is 3.9 inches.
anyway one of the nice things is that you can change the clip easily so it doesnt matter whether you're right or left handed
overall its a really nice knife, and when it goes dull you can send it in to be sharpened

Might be a damn sweet knife... but it's also $185! That's insane!

They are a little harder to find, but Puma made an excellent auto knife in the 70's and 80's. Check pumaonly.com
