new restrictions

As of June 16, 2005 the Webmaster has placed new restrictions on Non-gold members. This includes insert restriction here. Though we know that this might upset some non-gold members and make them feel as if they are being "forced" to go Gold, it's still a fact that running the community costs money, and with the increase in activity and membership, this means that Webrats.com uses more and more bandwidth, and he cannot pay for that out of his own pocket.

A $5/month Gold Membership will help support the community and make sure that Webrats doesn't die. Being a gold member also allows you to have a custom user text, avatar, signature, a bigger Private Message box, see who gave you Reputation Points, view other members' User Profiles, access to the Private Adult Lounge and the Arcade. If you can't afford to pay for a membership, please consider signing up for an Ebay account or a Maxim subscription using the Webrats referral links provided on the site. The Ebay referral program will not cost you anything, it will help keep this site running and it will give you all the perks of being a Gold Member for a 1-month period.

We are sorry if the new restrictions seem a bit harsh. We hope you would think that $5/month is a reasonable amount to donate to the site if you enjoy spending your time here. It's about as expensive as treating yourself to an extra Big Mac every month.

I might be flamed for saying what I am gonna say but I will say it anyhow-

I feel you guys have a right problem which you are trying to solve wrongly.

Your problem is high cost of bandwidth, so u are trying to charge members to recover that cost. There are two reasons people will find that objectionable-

1. Many guys just wanna hang around in BOTH etc. and will not pay for GOLD. I see nothing wrong in that and it will be sad if that is made fun of. Practically every pure discussion forum on WWW is totally free and I see that not changing (despite all the complaining about cost of hosting and what not...). So you need to charge for porn and not for other forums. Make a simple rule - Only GOLDs can go in the porn section, be it AL or GP. But this will need guts, all the popularity (and hence the AD potential) of WR is due to free Porn that Non-GOLD post. I mean, I find very few GOLDs doing the actual posting of porn. Most GOLDs, apart from finley and CD of course, are busy post whoring in BOTH anyway :naughty: In an ironical way, I would think that in order for you to get ad revenue you need more leechers than you would need GOLDs !!

2. The model should be "less free BW" rather than "high paid BW". Don't host any pics whatsoever (let free pic hosting site do that), that alone takes out huge BW needs (90+%, I would guess). There are enough pic hosting sites around (hell! rapid share hosts 50MB in one shot, no questions asked. I get more porn from free yahoo groups right in my 1GB+ FREE mail box that I care for!!). You can even redesign the porn posting in such a way that it works like yahoo groups, use the trillions of Meg's that Yahoo and Googles are prepared to give you free.

Don't get me wrong, I love this site and I spend far too much time here than perhaps I even should...but I am not a leecher and I would hate to be thought of as one just b'cos I might decide in future to go non-GOLD. Heck, I am sure that in last few months I have posted far more in WR than I have saved from other people threads. So in future I may have to pay to see the REP I got for it?? it sure doesn't sound fair to me....

It might help if you clarify your "vision" for this place. What are you trying to build here? -
a Free community forum with paid porn (this is what I feel you should be),
a paid community forum with paid porn (I don't think so),
a Free community forum with free porn plus some good paid porn (this is what you are now),
a Free community forum with free as well as paid porn but with different rules for paid and free members even in non-porn areas (new rules will make you this)

Shit, that above reads like non-coherent rambling so let me summarize-
1) Either make entire porn paid (position it as a different product) or
2) Let is remain like its today i.e. let non-golds be able to see reps, post polls, see other's profile, have avtaars, sigs whatever. That's the price GOLDs pay to see the porm posted by them !! I know that this argument holds as long as non-GOLD's post enough porn and for that find some technical solution (account locks up if a new thread is not started by a leecher in free GP section?)

We charge the 5 bucks to cover bandwith costs. You pay the 5 bucks so other people can do the leg work for you and all you have to do is drop a thanks, point click and enjoy. My problem is that all this measures don't penalize the lurkers who just come and leech and cause bandwidth problems in the first place. I welcome the move to block Arcade (if as Walso says that takes lots of bandwidth) but I am totally against moves that penalize pure play non-porn users (like yourself !! See I am in your side :-)). If somebody wants to just post in non-porn sections, he/she should be allowed to check rep, check profiles, have sigs, avataars whatever b'cos THESE things DON'T take bandwidth. Sure they take a basic overhead, for which you are supposed to throw ads at non-gold. As far as me replying to one line of your post, that was because you're calling people(non-specificly) out on where they post. Where someone posts really isn't anyone elses buisness, as people are free to post wherever they choose. I got here when it was just the Texas people. It was worth reading then. I remained here when the extras (sanz pr0n) started showing up, it was worth reading then. I'm here now when the pr0n is here...still worth reading to me and I'd say I spend about 5 minutes a month in the pr0n section AT MOST.

Am I missing something? Everyone is moaning about the above "restrictions", but let's look at them:

The only true restrictions here are the last three. The other "restrictions" HAVE ALWAYS been reserved for Gold.

When I joined, Waldo and the Mods had a goal for non-golds to earn their way into the AL. I busted my ass and followed the rules and got in. It was a good idea. I was "forced" to explore other areas of this community and I gained a new respect and appreciation this community.

After 3 months of AL privileges, they announced that the rules changed and I no longer had access to AL. I was hurt at first, but I got over it. Still I contributed and after 2 months coughed up the dough for Gold. I did it because I wanted to give back to the community. I know the cost involved in running a website. It takes time, dedication, and money.

Sure we have good members who contribute porn (pirated or not), but that doesn't pay the bills. If anything, you should pay for the fact that it is virus and popup free!!!

Look at this way, just because you live in your housing community, doesn't mean you automatically have access to the Country Club. The same applies here.

Waldo has valid reasons for most of these restrictions - I do think "looking at your own rep points" should still be free, but I agree with the arcade and member profiles. Paying $5 a month to play the arcade (which takes up a chunk of bandwidth) is still worth it. Looking at member's profiles should be a privilege.

PEOPLE, YOU'RE NOT PAYING FOR THE PORN OR THE ARCADE, BUT YOU PAYING FOR THE SERVICE. PORN IS AN ADDED BONUS OF THIS COMMUNITY AND ITS SERVICES.

wow, this is very heated. Waldo needs to provide incentive so people become GOLD. He doesn't know you, but he's giving you so much for free. People I know won't give me things! Bandwidth costs money. There are ways to decrease the BW, but they would be detrimental to the use of the forums. I came here for the pr0n, then realized I don't particularly care about it. I don't need an avatar, a signature, none of that. I would be nice to have access to the AL or the Arcade, but I can live without. If you aren't paying for anything, you have NO right to complain. I only complain when I run into something unexpected and end up having to deal with it. (This is a reference to something I've complained about earlier)

If anyone with a high-speed connection would like to do some good for the BW, find out your upload speed. Mine is 32 kbps. It's not very high, but it could reasonably host pics. If someone has a campus connection, they could probably host videos. Set up an FTP server and link to it. People could upload to it and save costs on the site.

:rant2:I like to think of it as a way to share an appreciation for beauty and the female gender as a whole! If you notice most of my posts so far haven't been really hardcore, like girls using dildos, cum drippin' off the chin, chicks stickin' shit up their butts...etc! I do have one small problem...I don't have a bank account for my PAYPAL! So I will soon have reached my spending limit for not being verified...which means I can no longer pay to be gold. I don't mind helping a decent WEB site stay afloat. Everyone here seems pretty casual for the most part, which is odd in cyberspace these days! There's some flaming and name calling, but not like I've seen elsewhere!

I arrived by mistake....discovered the porn.....got bored by the porn.....discovered the people warts and all......got to like some of them even. With the current exchange rate from NZ$ to US$ buying access to rep and profile would cost more than it's worth....so I guess I'll get to meet new folks more by good luck than design. I've done the ebay trick once before...so maybe they'll wear it twice...who knows! Anyway even without the porn......which I can'r even remember how long it is since I looked on it.....WR is still the best around with heaps for all.

My only comment Waldo would be that the strength of the community, paying or not, relies on the people to people contacts/relationships.....sure the porn is the bait and many get to exercise their *tackle*, but the current situation is a bit like a non drinker walking into a bar and not being allowed to meet the patrons without buying a round......although I fully understand you are sick of "open house on the management" , you still have to get them in the door......the ambience keeps the hardened alcoholics sculling......but agreed you should pay for the pool table, pokies and darts.
