Anybody on this board shoot serious target rifle/pistol?
If you do, what positions/competitions, and what guns?

Hey Lucky Bob,
I don't shoot comp, but I do shoot at the rifle range or down at the farm. It really depends on the day and what ammo I have loaded up to shoot. Most of the time, I enjoy shooting my Ruger 9mm. When it comes to rifles, the Ruger .17HMR is really fun to shoot. It shoots great groups. I have rifles that range from the .17 HMR to the 45/70 Government. Pistols from the 9mm to the 45ACP.
Back to your question, either you need to shoot the .223 or the 6mm. Those are probably the most popular in the bench rest comps. You need to find a flat shooting rifle w/ little recoil. After a day of shooting, you can blow your shoulder out in a heartbeat. I always thought the .243 would be a good round to shoot. But so would the 30-06 loaded down to a 110gr. bullet.
If you are looking to get involved in shooting comp, search around for the shooting forums. Here's one to start out on: http://shootersforum.com/
Good luck!

Actually, from back when I was going to summer camp, I'm ranked as the NRA Expert in the 50ft .22LR. That's the second highest, in case you didn't know.
I've also played around with a non-accurized Garand M1, although it kicks like a bitch.

Hey Lucky Bob,
I have an M1 Garand also, and it does kick! What grain bullet are you using?? You can lessen the kick with a smaller grain bullet. The 30-06 round usually comes in 150, 180 and 200 grain bullets. If you reload, drop down in bullet size and start with a starting load than a maximum load.
Were you using the iron sights on the .22 for the NRA Match?? If you were, that is really good!!

Yes, I was. Who bothers with telescopic scopes at 50 ft? Thanks for the appreciation, though.

When we're talking about 5 bullets in a .3" diameter circle, dead-on on the bullseye... shut up, and leave a serious thread alone.

I love my Ruger Mk III Hunter, it is great for tight grouping at any close distance in rapid succession.

Today i made myself proud. I used a sporterized 30-06 BAR and put 3 shots in relatively the same hole at 200 yds. At camp I never rated that high, but a few years ago I was the best in the camp at the time. To be honest it's probably because my father got up and taught the class for a few minutes.

I just shot my new 10/22 for the first time today, and I might look into shooting competitions at a range sometime.

What brand/model, what kind of sights, and what distance to target/type of target?

It's a Ruger 10/22 carbine. Just got it, so there's nothing special about it yet. I've just got alot of experience shooting from my time in the Army and would like to get into shooting again. For the moment I'm just plinking with it.

i thought he was at home for the summer and didn't have a good internet connection.
I was wondering where a good place to start looking for an entry level target pistol might be?

I had good experience with Rugers, and my teacher shot a Benelli target pistol (but that's really high end.)

I own an old Ruger Mark I target pistol, got it from my dad, years ago. It is a straight shooter and hasn't change much as far as looks go. The one he still has I want is the old High Standard target pistol. He can actually kill squirrels with it at a substantial range. Browning Buckmark are fine ones also.

Yeah, I think the Ruger I was shooting was a Mark II, but probably mostly the same thing.
After changing from D/A (but used as S/A) S&W .22 revolvers, the teacher had to keep on reminding us that we'd be banned from the range if we spazzed out on the semi-automatic functioning. :coold:

I shoot an Anschutz 2013 in 3P and prone smallbore matches, an Anschutz 9003 in international air rifle matches (60 shots standing).
Before I got the 2013 I competed with an Anschutz 1907, and before I got the 9003 I competed with a Feinwerkbau 300 that I borrowed from my coach and bought a Hammerli AR50 Pro.
I shot a small prone match concurrent to the main match with an old H&R Model 12.
I competed for Robinson High School in Fairfax, VA for a year, Randolph Macon Academy in Front Royal, VA for 3 years, during those 4 years in high school I competed concurrently with the Optimist-Acorns Junior Rifle Club, and am in my 2nd year of competition at NC State University in Raleigh, NC.
I have shot Bullseye pistol with a friend's Ruger Mark I, and his S&W Model 41.

I recently came across an SKS 7.62x39M at a local pawn shop, it is very
inexpensive, the ammo is very reasonable....it is field calibrated at 300 yards,
and holds 10 rounds.....I took it out, and shot a few rounds...it has to be as
accurate as my 700BDL .270.....without a scope......get one....I highly recommend
it for anything under 300 yards....only drawback, is the weight, and it comes
equipped with a grenade launcher and bayonet.....that's what makes it so
heavy.....

The SKS is a perfectly good gun for what it was designed for, but unless you're talking about a rattle battle, it doesn't exactly qualify as a target rifle.

I once had an national-level target shooter at my camp rifle range.. it wasn't a matter of how high the score was, it was a matter of how good the 10s were! (we're talking 50ft. .22LR targets, meaning that the 10 circle is a radius of .2 inches)
He also took like 10 times as long to set up a round of shooting as any of us did.

Must be A17 targets you were using? We use A-36s now in college, in that one, the 10 is not a ring, but a small negative ring. A plug of ~ .36" outer diameter is used to determine if it's a 10. The outside of the flange can't go past the 7 ring. And on the international targets, the x ring is not much bigger than the 10 on an A17, but it's at 50 meters instead.
