Twelve Killed in Fort Hood Shootings

A WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINE NEWS ROUNDUP

FORT HOOD, Texas – The Army said a shooting rampage by three active-duty soldiers on the Fort Hood base in Texas left 12 people killed, including one of the shooters, and 31 others wounded

Confirmation that the three alleged shooters were all active sparked immediate concerns that the attack was preplanned and politically motivated, not a sudden act by a disturbed group of combat veterans. Those concerns have grown as U.S. officials confirm that one of the shooters was Army Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan, a Muslim-American soldier.

A defense official said that there "were some signs that this might be an Akbar-type event," a reference to a bloody incident in early 2003 when Army Sgt. Hasan Akbar threw grenades into tents occupied by fellow members of the 101st Airborne Division.

Two officers were killed in the 2003 attack in Kuwait, which wounded 14 others. Military prosecutors said that Sgt. Akbar, who was ultimately sentenced to death, was motivated by anger at the deaths of Iraqi civilians at the hands of U.S. troops.

The shooting began around 1:30 p.m. Lt. Gen. Robert Cone said that all the casualties took place at the base's Soldier Readiness Center where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening.

He said the alleged shooters used handguns in the attack.

An Army spokesman said the base was locked down after the shootings.

Covering 339 square miles, Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the U.S. Home to about 52,000 troops as of earlier this year, the sprawling base is located halfway between Austin and Waco.

Sgt. Rebekah Lampam, a spokeswoman at Fort Hood, said a graduation ceremony for soldiers who finished college courses while deployed was going on in the auditorium at the time of the shooting.

Daniel Clark hugs and comforts his wife Rachel Clark outside of Fort Hood. Daniel's daughter is in an elementary school on the post where it was locked down after the shooting happened on base.

President Barack Obama, speaking at an event in Washington, called the shootings a "horrific outburst of violence." He added, "My immediate thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and with the families of the fallen."

The base is home to nine schools -- seven elementary schools and two middle schools -- and all were on lockdown, said Killeen school spokesman Todd Martin.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange said Texas Rangers and state troopers were en route to Fort Hood to help seal the perimeter of the 108,000-acre base.

Fort Hood officially opened on Sept. 18, 1942, and was named in honor of Gen. John Bell Hood. It has been continuously used for armored training and is charged with maintaining readiness for combat missions.

when we were at war everynow and again we would hear about things similar to this
fucking awefull
2 occations i rememmber off hand were both wives fucking around while the husband was up on the border
1 guy threw a white phosporus grenade in the sleeping bag of the guy who slept with his wife, he was roasted alive and every other troop in the tent was slightly cooked too
and the other was a sargent who went to the armory and got a claymore and set it up for his wife and her boyfriend to walk into when he kissed her goodnight

fuck war makes people loose the plot

My problems with this whole situation are as follows;

first of all how did this douschebag with terrible marks at Walter Reed, outwardly spoken against the wars (a big no no) and previously flagged for internet posts in favor of the insurgents, (A) make major, a field grade officer's rank, and (B) get cleared to deploy?

second of all (or third depending on which way you want to count it) how was he able to discharge 44 rounds in a room full of miltary personel. the us military is trained to bum rush the enemy in a near ambush (the kind of attack this would qualify as.) Did nobody in the room think to attack the attacker? So much for their AIT school. 44 rounds from two nine millimeter pistols takes at least one reload. There was plenty of time to take him out.

I will give them all the credit in the world for their immediate reaction to treat the wounded. In a civilian group I believe that there would have been more deaths due to no immediate medical attention. Great job there.

I hope they give this guy a death sentence. He can go join his brethren in hell.

Yeah religion of peace but check out the video of the 12 or 13 year old kid beheading a grown man being held down by the other assholes in Afganistan.

I have been thinking about this one quite a bit
Basically from our military history troops do not say jack shit when a senior officer says or does something out of line
Troops who have just finished basics are full of manners (yes thank you, no thank you, yes I like what you like sir)
In or military there was a case where there was this fat guy who struggled to run the 2.4 mile run
Basically he got the bridge late and his superior officer had a leather whip with him, he lassoed it around the guy’s neck and pushed him off the bridge
Essentially squeezing the life from him
The troops did nothing
Luckily for the fat guy an officer senior to this drill instructor was nearby and saw the whole escapade

Basically what I am saying are the guys finishing basics have authority ingrained into them
They see a major coming at them blazing away I bet the first thing they think is "salute him"

I wonder if I should take that as a slight to my reasoning ability. ;)
It's one thing for a brand new boot to freeze up at the sight of him shooting but first of all you can't tell a 1" patch signifying rank from more than 15 feet. So the whole "he was an officer," point I think is mute. So what we have is a man firing two pistols wearing cammies. Second of all there were hundreds of soldiers there. Not just boot PFC's and PVT's but Cpl's and Sgt's and officers and all it takes is for one man to step up for the rest to join in the attack.

The point is, there had to be a person of reasonable logic, combat expirence, and corps values (MC term I know) and leadership in that group that had the intelligence to do it.

dude if you think that what i said was against your reasoning then yes your reasoning is squew
dude i put forward an idea
so far to date the ONLY idea!
so if you cannot come up with any other reason this might of happened then that only leaves one

your soldiers are FUCKING CRAP

so iether concede that US soldiers are crap or come up with a diffrent reason!

I always say that the US Army is crap. That's what US Marines do. ;)

They have their good units but as a whole... anyway what I am saying is that there is no excuse for the lack of initative in taking this guy down. I don't need to come up with an excuse because quite frankly I am on the other side of this discussion as my origonal comments state.

And, just for that, I get a USMC vanity streak, courtesy of the Army high brass;

"There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion."
Gen. William Thornson, U.S. Army

"The safest place in Korea was right behind a platoon of Marines. Lord, how they could fight!"
MGen. Frank E. Lowe, USA; Korea, 26 January 1952

"We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on?"
Gen. John W. Vessey Jr., USA, Chairman of the the Joint Chiefs of Staff
during the assault on Grenada, 1983

"Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines."
Gen. John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, USA; 12 February 1918

Yep heard this from a couple of my friends. They're both Private's stationed at Ft Hood. After about 20 minutes since the shooting started they were told to report to the mess hall with 20 others and barricade it. Luckily they ended up ok.

Because I'm sure anyone who tried to do something is probably one of the casualties.

All this USMC shit talk is just that, shit talk. Army is still out there in the shit, hitting IEDs, shooting, getting shot....

Oh yeah, you're definately right about that. It's just shit talking. But my original point still stands. I just think they should have reacted differently, however you can never make a statement like that with full confidence unless you are or have been in the same situation.

Like I said though, all the props in the world to their immediate response to treat the wounded.
