DENVER — The Colorado ski town of Breckenridge has voted overwhelmingly to legalize marijuana.

Early returns Tuesday night showed the proposal winning with 72 percent of the vote. The measure would allow adults over 21 to have up to 1 ounce of marijuana.

The measure is largely symbolic because pot possession remains a state crime for people without medical clearance. But supporters said they wanted to send a message to local law enforcement to stop busting small-time pot smokers.

The vote comes as communities nationwide are struggling with how to enforce pot laws at a time when medical marijuana has surged in popularity.

I should have been an attorney.

As much as I could give a shit if pot does or does not get legalized or gay people can or cannot get married or if women can or can't get abortions... the only thing that is a given is that there are going to be legal battles waged and the only fucking winners are going to be attorneys.

Look how many politicians are attorneys. If they gave a shit about this country they would put tort reform at the top of their lists!

Instead you have dickhead lawyers making sure they have guaranteed work now and in the future.

Oh yeah. :werd: on Arianna :usuck:

Yah, I read that earlier too. Its a feel good move with no real push behind it. Its just basically a "read our lips, we want legal rec weed" vote. I do hope more and more people do this nation wide and get the attention of people who need to realize a bunch of stoners are about as harmful as a hand full of tittay.

yes please can you get on that
basicly my goverment was a very short distance to legalising weed completely and instepped the feggin DEA
yes the head of the dea came to this far away place and gave my goverment some deal and the next thing legal weed was off the table and is not alowed to be on the table for the next 10 or 20 years
hence why i despise your goverment for poking its nose where it doesnt belong

Well, think about it. Millions of dollars get pumped into the war on drugs. Tons of marijuana is used as currency. You remove their currency, and the drug cartels weaken. You have weak cartels, you have no reason to have departments like the DEA. Thousands of government employees lose their jobs and hundreds of crooked DEA agents stop getting bribes and kick backs from the cartels. Its not the drug they hate, its the lack of money.

And this is kinda funny....

SEATTLE -- San Francisco Giants star pitcher Tim Lincecum is facing misdemeanor marijuana charges following a traffic stop in his home state.

Washington State Patrol spokesman Steve Schatzel said Thursday that the 2008 Cy Young Award winner and former star at the University of Washington was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 5 in the town of Hazel Dell, about four miles north of the Oregon border, on Oct. 30.
Lincecum
Lincecum

An officer approached Lincecum's 2006 Mercedes and smelled marijuana as the pitcher rolled down his window. Schatzel said Lincecum immediately complied with a request to hand over the drug and a marijuana pipe from the car's center console.

The amount measured was 3.3 grams. Schatzel said police consider that a small amount for personal use, well below the maximum of 40 grams before possession is classified differently and carries a more severe penalty.

The arrest was first reported by The Columbian in Vancouver, Wash.

"It was about the size of a thumb, the whole thumb," Schatzel said of the volume of marijuana Lincecum handed over.

Lincecum was fined a total of $622 for driving at 74 mph in a 60 mph zone and for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Both are misdemeanors.

The 25-year-old All-Star starter entered a plea of not guilty through his attorney on Monday, according to records in Clark County District Court. A hearing that had been scheduled for Friday morning was canceled, pending a pretrial conference between Lincecum's attorney and a county prosecutor on Nov. 23.

Lincecum is currently scheduled to appear before a judge on Dec. 22.

The native of the Seattle suburb of Bellevue went 15-7 with a 2.48 ERA in 32 starts and 225 1/3 innings in 2009, his third season in the major leagues. He is 40-17 with a 2.90 ERA in his career and could be getting a huge, multimillion-dollar raise from salary arbitration this offseason.

Teammates consider the smallish right-hander a quirky perfectionist. They also consider him the "Franchise," the nickname they gave him when he broke into the big leagues only a year out of college. Others see his boyish face, shaggy dark hair, diminutive frame -- and his dominance -- and call him "The Freak."

San Francisco chose him 10th overall in the 2006 draft out of Washington, and he instantly became the organization's top pitching prospect since Hall of Famer Juan Marichal signed with the New York Giants as an amateur free agent in 1957.

He wasn't even quite 15 over the limit and I've seen people get warnings for going as much as 40 over, myself included- depends on the cop's attitude and the person in question's ability to think on their feet. Plus according to the article he was completely cooperative. Could it have been easily avoided? Yes. But people get away with far worse. Like Juan mentioned, there could have been Some chick getting raped or a drunk and seriously dangerous driver on the loose. Weed should be a relatively low priority. :(

Thousands of government employees lose their jobs and hundreds of crooked DEA agents stop getting bribes and kick backs from the cartels. Its not the drug they hate, its the lack of money.
"This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."

-President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961

You're correct, it's all about money. But it's not the measly salaries of Government bureaucrats that drives the 'war on drugs.' it's the billions made by weapons manufacturers that's really at stake.

During the cold war and the vietnam war era, the big defense contractors were selling the US planes, tanks, rockets, etc. in the fight against communism. During this time, noone in government cared much about marijuana, cocaine, etc. Police didn't enforce the drug laws, people smoked pot openly in the streets, on college campuses.

When the cold war ended, and vietnam was already a distant memory, the big defense companies needed a new reason for the US gov't to buy their wares, so they singlehandedly engineered the Reagan administration to declare a 'war on drugs.'

Since the US has been mired in Iraq & Afghanistan, and the defense contractors have an easy source of revenue, they haven't cared too much about the 'drug war.' Consequently, political initiatives such as medical marijuana and the Colorado vote were allowed to creep in under the Defense lobbyists radar.

You young 'uns better enjoy the lax drug enforcement situation, because if the US pulls out of Iraq and Afghanistan, the defense lobby will refocus it's ugly eye back on the 'war on drugs.'

Well, they might storm the streets and cause a ruckus for an hour or two. After that short time period, they'll all be high and sitting in the streets, on the sidewalks, laid out on park benches, or piled up in food shops getting their snack on.

Since when do sheriffs enforce state laws!?

MMJ is in the news every day it seems like, on the LAT. I read what the council is doing, and guess what is happening? LACC wants to ban collectives because the money transactions are viewed as a sale. So what did the groups do? Sue them. So COLA is pretty much bankrupt, facing mad lay offs and all sorts of shit, instead of allowing these guys a means to do business correctly and collect some fucking tax revenues. West Hollywood, which is like a fraction as big as COLA approved regulations and they have zero mmj related problems since then.

BackdoorJesus
11-16-2009, 05:25 PM
Well the sheriffs were the ones to perform the raid because it was initiated by the city of Lake Forest which relies on the County for local LE.

The whole thing is trumped up BS as the city is trying to build a case that the dispensaries are hotbeds of illicit drug dealing that will destroy the fine community by corrupting it's children and bringing in Mexican drug cartels. Can you say racist fear mongering?

Forget about the fact that the kids are not allowed into dispensaries (without a doctor's recommendation) along with the fact that the existence of the dispensaries is one of the greatest contributing factors to the reduction in influence that the cartels have over the distribution and sale of marijuana and the money those cartels make from it here in CA.

I mean hey, why regulate & tax something to put money in the community's coffers when you can spend that community's tax dollars to attempt litigating something away that is not going to go away? Myself, I suspect big kickbacks from the law firm to the city council members and the Mayor but hey I'm just a cynic.
