No, I won't give IE up, I like plenty of things about it.
So here's the problem I ran into:
While surfing the net earlier all I can remember doing is mouse clicking the background once.
Result? I see all pages on IE magnified, almost as if I were in safe mode. On the banner at top of page, the car to the right of Sophie is almost all the way over to the right of the screen. No, my desktop resolution didn't change and neither did the settings for FireFox and Google Chrome.
any clues how to fix this? thanks.

Check status bar, click it on under View/toolbars/Status bar. you see magnification icon in lower right. sounds like you're in 150% mode.

if you have a scroll mouse you can press and hold ctrl and use the wheel to make it bigger/smaller( you can also use the arrows to do the same but the wheel is nice imo)
press ctrl+0 to reset the zoom (works on both firefox and ie)
done.

thanks everyone. Ryan's idea worked. it was easiest, so I tried that first. No clue how it happened in the first place though...now I can go back to all the other sucking things I like about IE.

ugh, IE. You do know there is an IE plugin for Firefox? Even with the new IE (which is a ripoff of FF imo) there are still plenty of security issues.

IE is the problem. But yeah, I was going to suggest the control+scroll method.
ctrl-+ (plus) and ctrl-- (control + minus) zoom in and out (on the new IE and all firefox versions)
On the old IE versions, ctrl-+ and minus increase and decrease text size
yay I earned my money for the day
oh wait
