WORD 2007 help

Many of you know my computer skills are, at the best, rudimentary. With that in mind, I need some very basic help with MS WORD 2007. I hope there is a fix and someone can help me. Here's my problem:

When I open Word and begin typing a document, the line spacing is at 1.5. Not single spaced, not double spaced, but 1.5 spaced. This drives me nuts. I have to change the line spacing every time I open the program. Can anyone tell me how to set the default line spacing to single spaced??

I believe I fixed the problem. I found a default menu with some options. I picked the one I thought would end my torture and it apparently has.

I've hated Word 2007 since I started using it. Previous versions have pretty much been the same since 1997. I think I'm getting old because I'm getting pissed off about change!
