View Full Version : DirecTV PPV billing

We had DirecTV, It would attempt to dial-in like twice a day. We never did the PPV thing, since we have lots of kids we 'locked-out' the option so the kiddies would not be able to order anything.

Then we got a bill for PPV channels. 29 viewings, at all hours of the day and night, over a period of 14 days, $350 worth of PPV.

After we exchanged numerous letters with DirecTV, and they sent the bill to a collection-agency, and another year went by, they finally told us that the PPV viewings were for 2 years before they decided to even bill us. And that the unit had been trying to dial-in and down-load the billing for that long.

I have yet to this day, to view a single PPV anywhere, anytime.

DircTV insists that their equipment does not fail, or make-up charges.

But they also say that the equipment will routinely hold these charges for years before they will decide when to finally charge you.

And that DirecTV will routinely charge people for PPV charges years later, and not tell you that such is for things that they say happened years ago.

They did offer that they would accept a payment of half the money to drop the bill. Which we finally did pay, thinking that now they would release our credit-rating. What they did was they re-reported the reduced bill as an outstanding debt, back to the debt-collection agency.

There is not any method of successfully arguing with them that you did not watch a PPV once they get it into their computer. "Our system never fails, it is always correct"

Disconnect the phone wire. If they complain tell them you did away with the land line.

Yes, you can pull the plug, to stop the unit from calling in and charging you ever again.

But this does not stop all over-charges that have already happened.

In our case over $350 worth of over charges.

Many Motorhome dwellers still use their DirecTV systems, but again they never allow it to be connected to a phone-line.

Live and learn.

It is far better to simply use a Big-Ugly-Dish, and view everything from 30 satelites than to lock into what is offered from only one satelite.

Pulling the phone line DOES stop those old charges. It usually happens when a receiver is finally able to make another call (like yours that wasn't able to for a long time). The IPPV (impluse pay per view..means it was ordered thru remote) are stored on the access card until the receiver can dial in to directv to download. If the receiver cannot dial in, it cannot download. If you don't order PPV (like me) just unplug the phone line (unless you have TIVO)...D1recTV may tell you that the phone line is required for sports (bullshit it can be overriden), the additional outlets (more bullshit also can be overriden) or to be able to watch any ppv (bullshit...you can order online at D1recTV.com for no additional charge, and the movie will be sent to ALL receivers on your account).

As for the time of day on the bill...that can be misleading. Say you have a 2 year old that is playing with the remote at 3:00pm , that child can go forward on the guide to 3:00 am and order an IPPV so that the bill will show 3:00 am (even though it was ordered 12 hours earlier). The other thing that can happen with times is that a movie ordered was an all day ticket (meaning it plays non-stop all day the day you order it). This will show an ordering time of 6:00 am, the time when ADT ppv start over.

I used to work in D1recTV's CRG department (for almost 3 years) and got calls about this problem regularly.
