Just seen this on the news

Its been reported today that the Japanese console giant Sony have bought the console division of Nintendo, for an undisclosed sum. Sony recently lost a court case to the Immersion Corporation, and was ordered to pay $82 million in compensation. Sony made a press statement about the takeover today, "This is a great day for video gamers", Sony Chairman Howard Stringer states. He goes on to say, "We have not decided what we aregoing to do with the nintendo technology, but its going to be a credit to the sony brand".

We also got a press statement from Nintendo chairman Satoru Iwata "Nintendo has decided to move forward, we've decided to do what Nintendo is best at and make games". Then added "Nintendo will not be releasing any more games consoles in the future, its all about the games from now on".

Sony have bought the rights to use the Nintendo technology, however they have not bought the right to use the name, logo, video games or characters of Nintendo. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates when told about this said, "We are not worried that Sony have bought the console division of Nintendo, Microsoft has the Xbox 2 coming out later this year, this will take over the console market and change gaming as we know it".

its a sad day :(

Well look IMO nintendo 64 was a flop - however nothing can beat the greatness that was the SNES/NES with tonnes of titles with tonnes of replay value - they really were ahead of their times.

However, we should view this as a great day for nintendo - as surely sony will modify it and make it a hell of a lot better (ie: either build upon n64 to make it better or build their own console) so i hope they do the right thing by nintendo and let the developers of nintendo have a big say in what should happen :)

It looks like Nintendo is doing the same thing Sega did several years ago, in that they're moving away from hardware and becoming, exclusively, a software development brand.

It's not so much a sad day for Nintendo, et al, as it is a sad day for those of us like myself who have the fondest memories of such geekly pursuits as "blowing the dust" out of our original NES cartridges to alleviate the graphic-stutter problem all Nintendo systems were heir to, champing at the bit for months over news of the release of Final Fantasy III, and subscribing to Nintendo Power (the magazine which defined my pre-adolescent youth, IMHO).

The nostalgic part of me is dismayed by the news, but the practical part of me knows it's better this way. With any luck, Nintendo will be able to cut their losses and rectify their diminishing recognizability.
I hope it works out for 'em.

On a related note, am I mistaken, or does this leave only Microsoft and Sony as the sole competitors in the console market?

Man that is awesome ButterMup. Memories.

I had a trick beyond the classic "blow into it like a harmonice" routine. After you press the game down into the NES, Push to the left(on the cartridge) where the finger groove was. Then reset...bingo.

Life was simple then....I miss life back in the NES days.

Well if it's true, it'll be cool to see games like Metroid and Zelda on a XBox 2 or PS3.

smart move for nintendo, they couldn't produce anything to put them ahead of anyone else, except for the timeframe

If this was true, wouldn't it be plastered all over gaming sites like Gamespot and IGN?

You won't see Nintendo games on a PlayStation or a Xbox for a long long time... if ever.

This is a big, fat, juicy, sloppy lie. I'm no fanboy of any of the console makers or their 1st party games, but Nintendo has already said a hundred thousand times in the past that they will stop making video games altogether if they're not making consoles.

I don't know where this story came from, but it's a bigger fraud than Catholicism.

The only reason Sony's console devision exists is because Nintendo is the Patron Saint of Making Mistakes and Living to Regret them. For examples of this, see the Virtual Boy, or the N64, or the Gameboy Color, or the 64DD and on and on ad nauseum. The most important example of this is when the SegaCD failed and Nintendo backed out of a deal with Sony to make a cd expansion for SNES, Sony had nothing left to do with the technology and didn't want their investment to fail, so they released it and called it the Playstation.

That little juicy tidbit WAS an April Fool's joke put out by Sony in honor of their new caucasion CEO. The Japanese have crazy senses of humor: Gunpei Yokoi, the inventor of the Gameboy didn't get fired after he invented the Virtual Boy, they stuck him at a desk and gave him paperwork until he quit...

Now, as far as the next XBox kicking ass, I totally agree. I won't be buying one until I see that it isn't going to be as much a huge failure as the first one though. Seriously, burning power cables, huge problems with hackers (that drives game prices through the roof and scares away 3rd party developers, which would explain the lack of good RPG's vs. the PS2), not getting profits into the black until just recently and so on. It's a wonder why japanese game developers were so scared of the thing; it wasn't the giant american controller, it was the fact that no American console maker in the history of video games can say they did it right, look at the 3D0... fuck!

Look at the XBox! They didn't start making a profit until recently, XBox Live is a joke cause you can just play all your games online using a number of third party software suites, hardly any 3rd party support and so on.

Now, you're probably wondering what I own seeing as I'm on this soapbox.

I have a PS2, an XBox, a Gamecube, an N64, a VirtualBoy, a 3D0, a Jaguar, a CD-i, Atari models 2600 and 7800, Sega Genesis, 32X, CD, Saturn, and Dreamcast... any questions?

bwahahahaha that's hilarious

as to blowing nintendo games, I tended to blow, insert, jiggle a bit, and press down, and jiggle a little more. It all sounds very sexual now that my mind is in the gutter. lol

Sony did make a purchase, however. Sony Corp. and a group of partners completed a $3 billion cash acquisition of MGM.
